Home for the Holidays: Love146

I had no idea one sleepless night would change the direction of my family’s life forever. But that’s exactly what happened.

Seven years ago, having recently become a mom, I woke at 2 am. Nothing unusual, except this time there was no baby screaming. I couldn’t go back to sleep, though, so I took out my journal and started writing. Suddenly a thought came into my mind:

“Go work with Love146.”

It sounded important, but I hadn’t anticipated finding my life’s calling in the middle of the night. So I just wrote the thought down and went on with life, never mentioning it to anyone.

A few weeks later, my husband Steve came home from work. “Guess who’s coming to dinner?” he said.

“Rob Morris.”

Rob Morris–as in the president and co-founder of Love146? We had met him once before and Steve just happened to “run into him.”

Within a few months we were moving cross-country to start the work of our lives.

Holiday shopping time is nearly upon us and one of my goals as a mom is to avoid buying…how should I say it?

Junk.

Often, in the efforts to fill the narrow spaces, stockings accumulate plastic trinkets that break after a day or a few too many sugary, high fructose corn syrup laden packages.

But I want even the smaller gifts my children receive to have the ability to inspire their imagination and creativity (& yes, a little chocolate is fine, too!).

Keeping This Season Simple. Really.

For several weeks now, and even months in some cases, bloggers have been posting about preparing for a simpler holiday.

Tsh has a countdown series, Plan Your Peaceful Christmas and fellow contributor Jessica (from Life as Mom) also offers a free Simpler Season planning resource.

I haven’t done any planning whatsoever, except for pinning a few wishful thinking, “maybe I’ll find extra energy next month” crafty ideas on a Pinterest board.

November was an unreal crazy month for our family. Another move. Our second in six months. The worst cold we’ve had in years, the same time as our move. And now, in two days we celebrate our youngest daughter’s 9th birthday.

Christmas has not been on the radar. At all.

It appears that everyone around us has their holiday act together. They made a budget and saved money. Handmade gifts were started back in July. A cute family photo is back from the printer, ready to be mailed. Operation Christmas Child boxes have already been sent.

These theoretical people – I know they’re out there, I used to be one – are really on the ball.

Then there’s our family.
