Introducing Back to School Week!

Written by Jamie Martin, editor of Simple Homeschool and founder of Steady Mom

I‘ve been looking forward to this week for a while now. Many of you are in the midst of planning for the upcoming school year, and some of you may have already started your new school term. But even if you homeschool year-round it only takes one trip to a nearby store this time of year to realize one thing–it’s back to school time!

Those of us here at Simple Living Media thought it only appropriate to celebrate and encourage all of you who are busily making plans–so tomorrow we’ll be kicking off back to school week here on Simple Homeschool!

Every day this week stop by to visit for the chance to get some excellent advice and enter some amazing giveaways (They are really, really amazing!).

I’ll see you back here tomorrow to get started. In the meantime check out these helpful back to school links:

Where are you in the back to school process–are you still planning, have you already started, or do you school year-round?

  1. I am in the midst of final planning and preparation. We’ve been doing fun unit studies during the summer, but we will start our formal school year next month. My goal is to have everything ready to go, and a month’s worth of lessons prepared before we go on vacation. That way I can come home and relax knowing that school can start the following week.

We’re starting tomorrow to get the “classroom” ready (which is the equivalent of saying we’re going to find all the surfaces in the house so we can clutter them up again with learning materials). All of our brick-n-mortar school teacher friends are prepping their classrooms, so we are doing the same. And this mom can’t do it on her own with a new 3-week old in the house. So I’m enlisting the support of the kids. They will assemble their own binder/planners, look up and reserve books at the library for our first unit, declutter the bookshelves, and make menus. And it’s all part of my crafty plan to call it an orderliness/stewardship unit.

When I sit to nurse the baby, I look around the room and say, “Oh, yeah, I meant to do such and so.” Every such-n-so is going on the list to be dealt with this week: updating chorepacks, filling pencils bags, finding the last of the missing library books from the summer reading program.

The carrot being dangled is new school supplies. We took advantage of the teacher discount at the office supply store today and no one can have their new goodies till the work is done.

I’ll be back for the amazing giveaways!

  4. I’m a week out from our first year of homeschooling! Most of the time I feel really excited. Some nights as I get ready to lay my head down, I freak out! Our first day of school will be spent at the Getty museum in Los Angeles. It will be a special day for my older daughter (7) and I while my husband stays behind with the little one (14 months). We’ve checked some books out on Monet, Van Gogh and the Getty itself and will soon be ready to go explore.
