It really helped me not get so overwhelmed with all the ways to homeschool and my concerns of them learning everything they needed from me- simply put if we read together, the rest will come. We are fairly new in our homeschool venture (first year with all three homeschooled), and reading has been huge! I'll admit, I wasn't reading nearly enough 'chapter books' to my children until I was encouraged by one of your contributors. :) In only one short month, my children have become so accustomed, they will run upstairs to get into bed early so that they can hear more of the story. I can't think of a sweeter way for my 5 year old to fall asleep. I also find that we are making so many connections through our reading, enforcing what we've been learning along the way. Before I was a stay at home mom I was a special education teacher and a reading specialist. It was clearly evident which children were read aloud to and which ones were not. The benefits of reading aloud to our children are amazing. Also, I think the emotional aspect of it is so important.Some of my favorite memories are of my father reading to me before bed when I was little. And as a special education teacher, I had a lot of students classified as emotionally disturbed. I tried to find books they could relate to either the character, situation, etc. and it seemed to help them to open up a little bit. Now it seems like my 3 year old chooses the books that he wants read to him over and over based on something that he's processing in his life. It's like book therapy!
