The Big Fat Notebooks you’ll want on your shelf this year

Written by Jamie C. Martin of Simple Homeschool
I first heard aboutΒ Big Fat Notebooks from LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow (you guys know I am a fan!), who tweeted a photo of them. I was immediately intrigued, drawn to their bright colors and concept.
So when theΒ opportunity came my way to partner with Workman Publishing andΒ share them with you in this space, I gave it aΒ definite yes. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this series, and now that we’ve had them in our home for a few weeks, I’m just as excited!
SinceΒ my kids hitΒ double-digits, more than once I’ve looked nostalgically at our shelf of encyclopedia-type titlesΒ (like the Core Knowledge Series/Childcraft books), wishingΒ there was something similar for older ages.Β Well, the folks behind Brain Quest have created it!
Here’s anΒ overview:
“Itβs the revolutionary study guide series just for middle school students from the brains behindΒ Brain Quest.
The BIG FAT NOTEBOOK series is built on a simple and irresistible conceptβborrowing the notes from the smartest kid in class. There are five books in all, and each is the only book you need for each main subject taught in middle school: Math, Science, American History, English Language Arts, and World History.
Inside the reader will find every subjectβs key concepts, easily digested and summarized: Critical ideas highlighted in neon colors. Definitions explained. Doodles that illuminate tricky concepts in marker. Mnemonics for memorable shortcuts. And quizzes to recap it all.”
Just as bright and interesting on the inside as on the outside, my kids will go back to these reference books again and again, and I can consult them as a teacher when coveringΒ specific topics or answering their questions.
Here are the titles and what’s in each one:
Everything You Need to Ace MathΒ . . .Β covers everything to get you over any math hump: fractions, decimals, and how to multiply and divide them; ratios, proportions, and percentages; geometry; statistics and probability; expressions and equations; and the coordinate plane and functions.
Everything You Need to Ace ScienceΒ . . .Β takes readers from scientific investigation and the engineering design process to the Periodic Table; forces and motion; forms of energy; outer space and the solar system; to earth sciences, biology, body systems, ecology, and more.
Everything You Need to Ace American HistoryΒ . . .Β covers Native Americans to the war in Iraq. There are units on Colonial America; the Revolutionary War and the founding of a new nation; Jefferson and the expansion west; the Civil War and Reconstruction; and all of the notable events of the 20th centuryβWorld Wars, the Depression, the Civil Rights movement, and much more.
Everything You Need to Ace World HistoryΒ . . .Β kicks off with the Paleolithic Era and transports the reader to ancient civilizationsβin Egypt, Greece, India, China, Africa, Rome; the middle ages across the world; the Renaissance; the age of exploration and colonialization, revolution and imperialism, and the modern world and the wars and movements that shaped it.
Everything You Need to Ace English Language ArtsΒ . . .Β covers everything to get you your best marks: grammar, including parts of speech, active and passive verbs, Greek and Latin roots and affixes; nuances in word meanings; textual analysis, authorship, structure, and other skills for reading fiction and nonfiction; and writing arguments, informative texts, and narratives.

To earn a coveted spot on Jonathan’s crowded couch of books is no small feat!
When our Big Fat NotebooksΒ arrived, it wasn’t long before my oldest two, Trishna and Jonathan, disappeared with them.
Since Trishna has a visual impairment, it can be tough when most books for her age (13) are in tiny print. She was excited to see that these use a larger, colorful fontΒ that is more comfortable for her. AndΒ Jonathan immediately wentΒ straight forΒ the science volume, to check out how much information they had about weather inside. (Answer? A whole chapter!)
This weekΒ Workman Publishing wants to give a set of Big Fat Notebooks to one of you as well!

4children ages 14-12-8-4 I’d think we’d enjoy the science of it all????
I have a 2, 7, and 9 year old- they’d love to have the science book, I think.
Nice giveaway. Would love the set. My daughter would probably love the science book the best.
Mine are 6, 3 and 1, but my eldest is reading at a much higher level and these look amazing for her. I think her favorite right now would be the history.
My kids are 15 and 12. These very cool. History and Science interest me the most, but I would definitely use them all.
I have a 9 year old girl and she would absolutely LOVE science!
Our boys are 12 & 14 and would use the American History the most.
My girls are age 15, 13, 10, twin 8 yr olds and a 5 year old starting Kindergarten this year! I think the bright colorful graphics and interesting text in this series would draw their attention and keep them learning new things every day! I’m excited to check out the Big Fat Notebooks myself!
My children are 11, 8, and 3. I think they would enjoy World History.
I have 4 girls, pre-k, 3rd, 7th, and a sophomore. I would love the whole set but I think the Math one would be most beneficial because we are constantly finding resources to reference and refresh our memories for certain math problems.
My boys are Grade 2 and 5 this year and these books look great! The oldest would make good use of the Math and the youngest would love the Science book!
I have three kids ages 13, 10, and 6 (with one on the way). The boys would love science and my daughter the world history one. These books look fantastic!
My daughter is 9 and she would love the science notebook. Thank you!
My three boys are 4, 6, and 8 love science, but think they would love the American history book the most. We are doing our second year of American History now this year… 1860 forward… Thank you!
Ages: 15, 14, & 10. Science would be their favorite.
My kids are 2, 5, 7, and 11. Science would be my 7 year old’s favorite and for the 11 year old it would be American history.
15, 7, and 5, we’d love the science book!
My 4th grader said, if he had to pick just one then he’d go for World History!
Thank you for this opportunity. This is my first year to homeschool my younger daughter who is 11 years old, a 6th grader who reads at a 12th grade level. She is very drawn to Science and wants to be a veterinarian. I believe she will be just that and that the Science textbook would be of most benefit to her as it is her favorite subject. Last year, she wished to research blood cells and their types and purpose, and did so using books and the internet to compare information. She is driven and devours books. Yours look yummy and we would be grateful. Thank you again for a generous opportunity.
Not sure my chances of winning but OH would love to!! I have an 8 year old, a 12 year old, a 13 year old and an 18 year old. My son that is still homeschooled (the 13 year old) has many learning challenges and I think he would love these books. I think he would love the World History the most. Hope we win!!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed. π
Love these! My kids are 11, 10, 8, and 6. I think the Math would be the most helpful.
My kids are 10, 6, and 4. I am planning on homeschooling my oldest two next year. They would love the Science the most.
Yes! I love them already. Out of my young’ns (6,9,11,12 & 16) the oldest thought he would enjoy American History the most. I’m eyein’ the science book myself! π
My oldest is only 7, also have a 5yo, 3yo, and infant, but he loves world history! Science would be a close second though!
My kids are 14 and 8 and I know would enjoy Science and History, while I think Math would help all of us (except for my husband, the math whiz)!
