This giveaway has ended. I’ll announce the winner on Sunday!
I‘m back for another Home for the Holidays giveaway! We’ve got 15 giveaways across the entire network this week—all great gift ideas, perfect for the holidays.
Today I’m featuring a practical gift that has made a difference in my kitchen. I know it will be a pleasant addition to one lucky winner’s kitchen as well.
I’m giving away a three piece ceramic knife set and a vegetable peeler from Shenzhen Knives! The winner will receive it just in time to use for all that upcoming holiday cooking.
Read on to learn more about these knives and how you can win.
If you, like me, are mainly used to steel blades, these white ceramic knives will look different initially. Each set comes in a padded case to keep them secure, and you can continue to store them there or in a knife block.
I was a bit skeptical about how the ceramic blades would work, but the difference was clear immediately. They were much sharper than the knives we’d been using for years. My husband and kids, when helping with chopping onions and other veggies, commented about how easy these are to use.
My kids have especially enjoyed the vegetable peeler–in the past they found our other peeler cumbersome and usually left the job up to me. This one they could use with no problem.
What makes a ceramic knife different from a metal one? Well, ceramic knives are made out of zirconium oxide. The ceramic blade undergoes high-pressure molding before being fired. Then it is ground and polished on a diamond wheel to form the ceramic blade’s edge and attached to the knife handle — giving a very hard edge that rarely needs sharpening.
One thing to remember, that we learned the hard way, is that these knives need to be used with either a wooden or plastic chopping board. Using them on glass will dull them more quickly or may result in chipping. Luckily we switched over to our plastic board without any damage to the knives. (Note to self: Always read instructions first!)
Ceramic blades will not rust. Their chemical inertness to both acids and alkalis and their ability to retain a cutting edge far longer than forged metal knives makes them a very good culinary tool for slicing and cutting through boneless meat, vegetables and fruits.
Shenzhen Knives provides high quality ceramic knives at an extremely affordable price by cutting out layers of distributors and doing the majority of their marketing online, enabling them to pass on savings directly to the consumer.
One Simple Homeschool reader will win a 3-piece ceramic knife set and a vegetable peeler from Shenzhen Knives!
How to win
Everyone has two chances to win. Here’s how:
1. Comment on this post, answering this question: How old are the knives you currently use in your kitchen?
2. For an extra entry, ‘Like’ Simple Homeschool and Shenzhen Knives on Facebook. Then come back and leave another comment here, telling me you did so.
This giveaway has ended. We’ll announce the winners of all the holiday giveaways at the end of the week.

I use one santoku knife (i am a bit of a minimalist) that I bought 5 and a half years ago.
It was from a high end store with a french name.
I just took it to be sharpened in April, and they told me it was in great shape
and didnt really need more than a light touch,
but it just doesnt work anymore.

I use both traditional knives by Forschner and a pair of ceramic paring knives. My metal knives need to be professionally sharpened about once a year. My ceramic knives are slightly more than ten years old, are just as sharp now as they were brand new. I can still split hairs with them, although my sight is not quite as good as it was then.

My main knife is a 5″ and I purchased it two years ago from Pampered Chef. The tip broke off less than a year from when I purchased it. My other knives (two paring knives) are all cheapies from somewhere. For the amount of cooking I do, it may be criminal to have no quality knives!

We got our knives when we got married over 10 years ago. They are in a nice wood block, which I like, but the knives themselves are very dull and have wooden handles that are splintering. Well, they are so old, I don’t remember how old they are 🙂 Think, thirty years? I recently bought one knife, thinking I would just use it for everything, and it seemed so sharp in the package – alas, it is sharp enough to slice my finger pretty quickly, but not sharp enough to cut through some of my food easily – which makes me fear that I really am going to slice through my fingers often! A new set would be wonderful. 🙂

My knife is a very inexpensive one from Target that does the job but I would love a better one. We cook almost all of our meals from scratch at home and I can imagine how nice it would be chopping with this set. I think my knife is 4 years old. 🙂
Robyn Jarrell
Our knives are almost 20 years ago. We got them from his grandmother when we first got married. I’ve looked for a good quality set at a reasonable rate, so far I have not found them 🙁
Karen
The newest ones were wedding gifts, so seven years old. The oldest ones…well, I think they were wedding gifts to my parents. Maybe it’s time to move those out of the drawer…
Michelle
My knives are the economy set I got ten years ago when I moved away to my college apartment. They are super dull and definitely need replacing with a quality set.

Ha! I’m in the same boat as many of your commenters! Our knives are as old as our marriage, which is almost 10 years old, already! They’re also not anything fancy. I have one Henckels knife that is AMAZING in how much better it is than the others. It would be awesome to have a whole set that cuts through anything as if it were butter! Thanks so much for the chance to enter!

Some are very old (hand-me-downs from my husbands family). We do have a couple of new ones from our wedding. These look so fun!

We got our knives when we married, so they are 7 years old. New knives never make it to the Christmas list for some reason…ummm, wait! They never make it to the list because it’s so much more fun to buy toys for toddlers = )

My knives are going on 22 years old. The Chicago cutlery was a wedding gift. The blades are getting dull (desperately in need of sharpening) and the handles are dry and brittle…yes, they’ve been put in the dishwasher too many times…one downfall to wood handles. This set looks amazing!

I have two ceramic paring knives that are almost 30 years old, as are my Forschner Steel knives. My steel knives have to be sharpened each year in February; my ceramic knives are just a sharp today as when they were first bought. My knives are +12 years old. I worked for the company during summer breaks in college…I feel SO terrible I “forced” a good majority of my family and family friends into buying them. They are ridiculously expensive and don’t hold up and perform as promised. Luckily my set was not full price. Boy could I use new ones so I can stop listening to my husband remind me what junk they are.

How old are our knives? Let’s see. They came from my mom, but I can’t remember if it was pre-child or post-child. He’s almost 10 so I’ll say 10 years give or take. They have been through it all, literally. They went through Katrina flooding and I’m not exactly sure how my husband saved them. While that is a valiant effort on their part, we could you use a set that has not been through a major (man-made) disaster!

Teresa
Our knife set is about 10 years old, plus various and sundry knives we’ve garnered from hither and yon that are who knows how old! 🙂
Erin
My knives were inherited from my grandparents — some are in better shape than others, but they have sentimental value, truly.
Chris
Most of our knives are about 4 years old- wedding gifts or bought as we moved in to our house, but some of them are actually from my husband’s total bachelor days well before we met, so probably 10 or so years old. They are cheapies too so I’m surprised those have made it.
I’ve never heard of a ceramic knife before (of course, you can imagine at four years of marriage I’m still pretty new to homemaking) but it sounds dreamy. We use almost exclusively wood cutting boards made by my father in law, so there would be no new habits in that regard. I’m going to have to look further into these!
mandy
Well, the newest are 7 years old!

Actually the one knife I use regularly is about 15 years old but it’s such poor quality that I have to sharpen it every day!! Other than that I have a couple of other useless knives that really need to be replaced and they’re only a few years old. I would LOVE these Shenzhen knives!
P Roland
My knives are just over 7 years old. We bought them for ourselves as a housewarming present. They are fantastic, however, after using both regular and ceramic clipper blades and noticing a big difference, it would be fun to try the ceramic knives and see what the difference feels like. Thanks.

I bought a new chef knife with a serrated surface on the blade about two years ago. All the other knives in my home were my moms and they are old! at least 50 years old and not very good!OK! laugh!
Elisabeth
I liked both Simple Homeschool and Shenzhen Knives on Facebook!
Molly
My knives are only a couple of years old. We gave away all the not-so-great ones and now have two that are fantastic!
Billy
I believe over ten years.

We received a nice knife set from my parents a couple of years ago, so most are new. Others are 10-20 years old.

They are about 7 years old.

I liked you both on FB! 🙂

Well, many of the knives I use in our kitchen I’ve had since we got married…twenty years ago! Shameful, I know! 😉

I have one that I bought last year, but other than that, about 15 years old.
Kim
My knives are about 5 years old.
Robyn
I don’t know – they were my mother-in-law’s!
Jason
My wife and I got our knives when we were married 12 years ago. Would love new ones.
Tamara
Just stumbled on your website, great stuff 🙂 Our knives are about 18 years old as we got them when we got married. Always just made do with them. My son recently has shown a real interest in cooking, so these would be amazing!!!
Emily
Our knives are ones my husband received as a gift before we married, so at least 7 or 8 years old. He loves them, but he has always admired Shenzen knives!
Lizze
Mine are about 10 years old – a set I bought when I worked at Williams Sonoma

I don’t even know. I got them for free at a yard sale. They have to be pretty old though

The knives I use in my kitchen are the knives we got as a gift when we were married. Nothing fancy. And could definitely use an upgrade since we’ve had them 5 years now.

My knives are at least four years old. In fact one of the blades actually broke this summer.
Rachel (Hounds in the Kitchen)
We have several old paring knives that are totally bent out of shape.

My knives are 10 years old and work just fine. My mother-in-law, on the other hand, has some really ancient knives and none of them are sharp. If I won these knives they would go straight to her, thereby saving someone a finger.
Kel
How old are my knives? I don’t know! We’ve been married for 16 years and my husband had them before that. They aren’t that great anymore. Winning this would be wonderful!
Megan
I had to think about that one…. 10 years.. could they really be that old?!?!?! Eeeeek :o)
Chhaya
My knives are at least 6 years old …

Our knife set is almost 6 years old. We got it as a wedding present.

Our knife set is 5 years old–and we badly need to get them sharpened. We lost he sharpener, and for someone who loves to cook, dull knives are a serious problem!

My knives range from 15 years old to 2 years old. I have a couple of really good ones and some mediocre ones I’d love to replace.
Liz
At least 10 years old…anniversary gift. We love cooking and could use new sharp knives!
Jamie
Mine are just over a year old – we were able to buy a small set of good knives after most of the cheap set we’d registered for when we got married had begun to break. If I won these, I’d give them to my sister-in-law who is studying to become a chef, and is getting married next summer.
Carri
My favorite go-to knife is 16 years old. I bought it when I moved into my own apartment my first year of grad school.
Karen
My kitchen knives are the butt of constant jokes in my house. Many of them are 20 years old, long-ago wedding gifts. Every few years, I will get one as a gift, but I have yet to receive a really GOOD, chef-quality knife. *sigh*
Karen
Liked both in FB! 🙂
Leisa
Ours are 12 years old! Fingers crossed—would love to win!
Jen
Mine are a few years old, we have been slooowly upgrading!

Our knife set is probably 9 years old or so.

I think my husband bought a set of knives right after we started dating. So that means they are almost 15 years old!
