The feeling is common–the one I felt so strongly seven years ago–the one I get emails from readers about regularly:
Something within (or without) draws us to homeschooling, but we have no clue what we’re doing. We stumble along and by trial and error gradually find our way. We pick up confidence as we go, though we still face days and nights when the fears and doubts come upon us.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a resource–a start up guide, so to speak–to build a solid foundation and educate us in the basics of homeschooling? It wouldn’t eliminate all the struggle, of course, but it would serve as a launching pad for our homeschool journey.
That’s why I want to introduce you today to Homeschooling 101: Getting Your Homeschool Off to a Successful Start by Kris Bales of Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.
I’ve known Kris for a few years now–because she contributes her inspiring words regularly here. She has homeschooled her three kids for over 12 years, and just celebrated her oldest’s graduation in May!
In other words, she’s been at this for a while and has experience and wisdom to share.
Kris starts her ebook with some of the most important information a potential homeschooler needs to know–how to find and comply with the laws in your area and also how to discover a local homeschooling support group (so crucial as you’re getting started!).
Moving on from there, Kris gives a brief overview of the many educational philosophies common to the homeschooling lifestyle. She describes traditional, classical, Charlotte Mason, unschooling, and more in easy to understand ways–something I wish I could have gotten my head around right from the start of my family’s journey.
But she also urges readers (& I completely agree) not to box yourself into one way of doing things:
“Very few people are ever 100% any given style. Even those who lean very heavily toward a particular style may find that they shift toward other styles during different seasons of their homeschooling life. No matter where you find yourself on the spectrum, I think that there is always something we can pick up from others.”
Inside the pages of Homeschooling 101 you’ll also find Kris’s suggestions on buying curriculum (you can see what resources she’s using this year here), her top picks of homeschooling blogs, and how to determine and teach toward your child’s learning style.
There are also chapters on how to deal with the naysayers in your life who disagree with home education, tips on planning your school calendar for the year, and recommendations if you’re getting started without a lot of money to spend.
Kris ends her book with a collection of words of wisdom from veteran homeschool moms, like this reassuring gem from Cherie R:
“Don’t pressure yourself to be the “perfect” teacher. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and to learn from them. There are lots of “shoes” in the homeschool store, and there isn’t one pair that is perfect for each family.
Whatever you do, DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO THE SUPER-HOMESCHOOL MOM down the street … most of us are not like her and we do just fine. If you love your children, and are committed to giving them the best possible education, you will do a great job.”
Blessings on you and yours as you find the right homeschool “fit” for your family. And if you could use a little direction along the way, I think you’d enjoy Homeschooling 101.
