My son is reading a Magic Tree House book right now about the Polar region, and thanks to the TV show H2O, Australia is one of my kids’ favorite places! This should be a fun week. 🙂

We have really enjoyed following along with your summer bookclub here in New Zealand. We have read so many wonderful books that have opened our eyes and our hearts to how other people live around the world.
I look forward to doing a week of ‘down under’ seeing as this is where we are! Last week I went to a good childrens book shop to purchase the one and only book you have listed on NZ, “Elizabeth: Queen of the Seas”, and they didn’t have it! I have managed however to reserve it at our library. It’s a shame you weren’t able to find more books on NZ that are accessible to you in the US because we have so many beautiful childrens books on our culture and way of life. And we are different from Australia! Sorry Aussie cousins, but you seem to have more of the limelight this week! ( I do have blood relations in Aussie too so I do have a good relationship with your country!) *smile*.

You’re welcome, Fiona! And I did have trouble finding books that were in print on NZ here on this side of the pond, but I’d love to hear your favorites, and I’ll keep them on file to research for the next edition of the book! There is one other book to look for as well: Kakapo Rescue is from the 10-12 age range from NZ. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the club!!
Hi Jamie, yes I did see Kakapo Rescue and forgot to mention that ,as the bookshop didn’t have that one either!
Anyway, some of our favourite books are picture books that would be suitable for the 4-6 and 6-8 year range. My 8 year old son still enjoys reading these. They are:
A series by Donovan Bixley, including, “Little Bo Peep”, “The Wheels on the Bus”, and “Old MacDonald’s Farm”. These books are extra Kiwi special as the illustrations are gorgeous and have a very strong Kiwi theme.
Another series is by Michelle Osment, “Perky, The Pukeko” stories. These are delightful stories about a little Pukeko bird, (native swamp hen to NZ).
There is also a lovely book called “Manukura, The White Kiwi”, by Joy Cowley. A lovely story about a rare white kiwi that we had a couple of years ago here is NZ. Joy Cowley is a great NZ author worth looking into.
An older childrens series written about NZ is the” Riwaka Gang Adventures”, by Denis W. Shuker. There are currently 3 books in this series and are suitable for the 10-12 age. The books says age 8 up but my 11 year old boys really enjoy them as they are thick chapter books. My 8 year old would need help reading it due to the volume.
I hope this helps a little for any future book you write, a second edition sounds exciting.
Actually I would love to send you one of these books, I am sure you would love to read “Manukura, The White Kiwi” to your children. How could I do this for you? Please let me know.
