My kids are ages 5, 3.5, and 1. We just (the other day!) decided to try homeschooling our 5 year old. We said earlier in our marriage we’d never do that (that’s what we get for being all self-righteous haha). My older 2 actually do enjoy doing workbooks a lot for learning but in the summer, I love just going outside on “nature walks” and letting them take their time to explore. We talk about what we see, sometimes collect things, or go on a scavenger hunt of sorts. We also tried a 2 hour/day summer camp week and that was a blast for them to do something different and they learned so much! 🙂
Brittany
My children are: almost 5, 3, 2 and a newborn. My favorite way to keep them learning is to take them to the library, it offers something called a discovery room for the kids to learn and play and we can always check out some books before we leave. I always try and let them pick what interests them!
Samantha
My Kids are 4 and 8. To keep them learning over the summer we do crafts, read books, visit children’s museums and just get outdoors and discover nature. We also visit our local library once a week for story hour. My oldest is really too old for it since they focus on the smaller kids, but he still looks forward to it.
Joy
My children are 10 years, 8 years and 5 years. This summer, we’re doing a bit of “school” most mornings….reading, math (mathplayground.com has a lot of fun games, worksheets leftover from the school they attended, games like Yahtzee), writing (letters to grandparents and friends far away, lists of what they want to do when we get back to America). We’re missionaries in Africa who will be furloughing this October and will be in U.S. for 1 year where I’ll homeschool.,…my first time EVER! So, I’m researching homeschooling and came across your website, which I’m enjoying greatly and finding VERY helpful. Thank you for taking the time to help others like me.
Joy
…and just liked you on FB! 🙂

Our kiddo is turning 6 and we do homeschool all year round. Since we live in a cold climate, we take advantage of the warm weather when we have it and do more outdoor activities.
Tiffany
My kids are 7, 4 and 2. During the summer, we spend a lot of time at the library, the children’s museum, the zoo and in the woods. We also try to take several small trips to cities and parks within a few hours from us. National historic sites have been surprisingly fun for everyone.
Laura

My kids are 5, 10, 12, and a baby on the way. I keep them learning during the summer with educational games.
Amy
My children are 6, 9, 12, and 16. In some ways summer is even busier than other times of the year because my children suddenly have access to all of these community education and rec classes that aren’t available during the school year. They take full advantage of these and participate in everything from reading programs at the library to science classes at the state parks to theater and art classes.
Amber
My kids are 5 and 8 and we also do the summer reading program at the library!
elizabeth
my kids are 14,11,and 9, we do a summer reading program at the library.
Kristin
My kids are 14, 13, 11, 9, 8, 6, 5, 4, 2 and 8 months. Yep – that makes 10 kids!

Thanks for the opportunity to win! I love the few Dover things I’ve used over the years!

Sarah Delaney
My children are 5, 2.5, and 8 months. Some of the things we love doing in the Summer are LOTS of reading, bike rides, eating watermelon and homemade ice cream, blowing bubbles, and ice cold popsicles.

My children are 14, 12, 9 and 6. Life is learning! To keep them learning my husband and I stay present in their lives as much as possible: doing things WITH them and talking with them every day. When we are unable to do so the children have workbooks and activities to keep their minds sharp. Even TV is a learning experience as they watch documentaries and docudrama.
Amber D

Rosemary Starr

My littles are 8 & 6 …. My favorite way to keep learning going is really just to let them explore!! These books look so fun – they would love these!!
Kristi B
My kids are 5, 4, 3, 23mth, & 8mth. My oldest has to do a Raz Kids episode, a Ten Marks assignment and some reading every day before he can play video games. We are also starting a short Bible Study program today – My Brother’s Keeper. The 4 & 3 year old are attending a half-day pre school in the afternoon b/c they need extra help with speech. The other two just get to play. I also signed them up for several reading programs so I’m trying to read to any one who will listen for at least 30 min a day.
Kristi B
Already “Liked” Simple Homeschool on FB, but also “Liked” Dover on FB.

My kids are almost 4 and 3. My favorite way to keep the kids learning is to keep hitting up the library all summer long. If we’re swimming a lot, we’re reading about and experimenting with water. If they have a new interest, we’ll pick up a book and then find a way to do some hands-on learning.
carissa
My children are 9 and 7 and I love to keep them reading by taking advantage of the library summer reading programs. Also, we do most of our science during the summer months instead of winter. We love nature walks and study too! 🙂

I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old. Summer is jam-packed with activities for us. I have them in a music class once a week. We go to the library where they do story hour and a craft. We read a lot! Checking out new books every week ensures a great variety of stories to hear. We support our local organic farm through a CSA and volunteer there as well. Also, tending to our own garden is a great learning experience. Not to mention all the canning and freezing come harvest time. Most importantly, we take advantage of the great weather and just get outside and explore nature.
tameka
My son is 8. He’s continuing what he usually does — watching youtube for art inspiration and creating his own art, exploring outside, reading aloud, sewing a little, and will be allowed to visit other artists to watch them work.
Sara
I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. We do tons of learning–reading, practicing letters, lots and lots of play and hands-on science, field trips, and following up on each child’s current interests with thematic units each month. These look like fantastic resources!
Nancy
My kids are 14 & 10. I think it’s tough to keep kids from learning every day. We read even more in the summer and we do tons of fun craft projects. Nancy

Megan L.
My kids are 4 and 10. During the summer, we read TONS of books. I also sprinkle in a little math and handwriting practice. My goal this summer in particular is to be present and intentional about resting and enjoying one another. We’re playing together, both inside and outside, having important conversations, and just enjoying being together.
Tiffany
They are 16, 11, 8 and 6. I try to keep them reading, and we talk a lot about all sorts of things, watch educational programs and play educational games. My kids are 6, 5, and 1. We do school year round and throw in some extras activities to mix it up and keep it fun!
Christy S.
My children are 12, 9, 6, and 3. During the summer I usually try to keep their math skills from deteriorating by doing math drills or worksheets. We also try to continue reading aloud. I say “usually” because we are in the middle of a move this summer and are in temporary housing without all of our books. The kids have been doing lots of drawing, though. 🙂

We talk talk talk about whatever we are noticing around us–then come back and look it up for more info online or at library!
Leslie
My girls are 5 and 9. We love and learn with books, books, and more books! We love to read. We live in the city so summer is also focused on getting outside and into nature (and water!). Exploring all that we can and camping when possible. We also try to make our family vacation historical since both of the girls love history and visiting places that involve role playing. We went to Mystic Seaport last summer, Sturbridge Village the summer before, Lancaster, PA, earlier this spring. Mostly, we just try to slow down in the summer and enjoy and learn from whatever is around us.

My munchkins are 8, 6, 4, and almost-2, with another due in November. For summer, we’re working on learning to play chess, sharing and taking turns (not an easy task!) and tons of oral spelling. (“Mom, how do you spell ‘circus’?”) I’ve also managed to get my hands on the kids music albums GT and the Halo Express, which we listen to almost daily. I love it when I hear them humming a song, because it’s a Bible verse. 🙂

They read to me daily as part of our library’s summer reading program; we spend time outside discovering nature (they are currently obsessed with looking for and trying to catch various bugs); and we’re doing a bit of living math or math games so that they don’t realize that we’re “doing math”! These books from Dover would be great to add to our summer (or even year round) learning!
Nyla

We are taking a relaxed approach this summer but anytime someone has a question or is curious about something we write it down on a piece of paper and post it on our bulletin board. Then, when we feel like doing some research we pick a question from our bulletin board and go find books at the library, look it up online, or try to find an appropriate video to watch that answers the question.

Heidi
My kids are 5, 2, and 5 months. I always try to find a learning experience with everything. Whether it be something about life or school related. So in the summer we are outside more and exploring more therefore more opportunities for me to make learning fun.
Sarah Malone
My children are 8,6,3, and 1! We are enjoying a much needed break this summer, but I did start a read aloud book club with friends and neighbors! Children enjoy a preselected chapter book (Newberry Award winners, mostly!) read out loud with by parents every two weeks. Then the group meets, enjoys a light discussion, and plays at the park! The kids love reading, not only because the books are amazing, but because they look forward to the book club play date! It is a win win for us!
Heidi
Liked Dover and Simple Homeschool. Thank you!
Katherine
My school aged kids are 5 and 4 (little siblings are 2 and 7 months). We like doing workbooks, finding out more about topics from our favorite PBS kids shows (Curious George and Wild Kratts), and lots of learning through play.

I have 2 girls. One 6 and the other is 3. They never stop learning. We talk about car colors while driving and count the number of vans, cars, etc we see in parking lots. We use chalk and do math on the sidewalk. Science is everywhere and having a husband that is a science nut makes it fun and easy.
Mamagrubbs
My children are 12, 11, 8, 5, and 9 months. Our summers include joining the reading program at the library and then reading lots of books to get the small prizes. Also, we try to make the summers time to catch up on life skills like learning a new chore cooking, laundry, ironing, etc. Tuesday’s and Thursday’s we use workbooks to review what we learned in school the last year.
Frances P
My girls are almost 15, 10 and 5, we’re homeschooling the youngest this fall. Brand new to homeschooling! However, we work on math facts and reading a lot during the Summer, using flash cards and kahn academy and visit our local library.

Kris Bell
Our two sons are 6 turning 7 this week and 8.
We spend lots of the summer at special events at Fort Laramie NHS learning about trappers and mountain men; bats and other nocturnal animals, star gazing; listening to folk music and participating in the Old Fashioned fourth of July.
As well, the boys are leaning about concert bands, band instruments and how it all stays/comes together with a director while I play in a local community band this summer.
Lora
My kids are 7, 4, and 1. During the summer, we explore our local parks, go camping, hike at least once a week, and read aloud as much as my voice can handle. Now that the oldest is reading independently and voraciously, he’s helping out a bit with the read-alouds.
Sarah
My girls are 7 and 9. This summer we have been using a workbook and Ipad apps for flashcards/math games to keep the math fresh.
Hannah
My boys are 4 and 6. Our city sponsors a cultural pass summer program that gives kids admission into museums, historic sites, and a variety of arts performances. It makes for a fantastic summer of field trip experiences that we supplement with lots of reading!

Hi Jamie,
My kids are 8,6,5, and 3. I believe children are learning all the time, so our favourite way to learn during the summer is to simply enjoy the season! Lots of outdoor adventures. Ramadan is also in the summer this year, so we will be reading/studying things related to and doing a lot of crafts/baking in celebration of the Blessed Month.
Kelly
My children are 9 and 6. We continue our school through the summer and read lots of books from the library.
Debby
My kids are 9, 6 and 3. We are still doing math, science and reading through the summer, but my kids just don’t realize it because I am sneaking it in. It is easy to find ways to connect our learning to everyday things or activities. And my older ones love teaching the younger ones things that they don’t know yet. It is really beautiful.

My children are ages 7 and 4. Two boys full of energy! We live on a farm and the boys learn a lot about farm animals, hay, farm equipment and hard work. We also take trips to historic places during the summer… National parks, state parks, forts, etc. We go camping and explore nature. And we read a lot of books together. They also have “bored” time which makes them use their imaginations and be creative.
Sally P.
My kids just wrapped up K, 2nd and 4th grades. Summer is the best because there is so much to experience in our own living space. Watching the caterpillars that eat the passionflowers that grow all around our garden turn into butterflies is an all-time favorite summertime activity. Growing and preserving produce and breeding goats for winter/spring milk keeps us busy as the cycle of life continues on for one more year! The kids spend car-time reading up a storm for our library’s summer reading program. When the heat of summer really sets in, I’ll piece together a box of goodies for each of them, project kits and activity books/supplies, to shake things up when heat waves keep us indoors more!
michelleJ
My son is five so still lots of free play! But, I’ll do some baking with him, work on some ‘life skills’ jobs around the house, and certainly Bedtime Math! Love to just look for little learning opportunities – reading “Lions at Lunchtime” an hour ago and took a quick map break to find Kenya. 🙂
Lizi
My kids are 6 and 7 yo, going into second and third grade this coming school year. My best ways to keep them learning over summer is summer reading programs, field trips and watching documentaries according to their age. The youngest one is intersted in dinosaurs right now and my oldest one is starting a collection of coins from different countries. It’s fun!

Janae
My children are ages 10, 7, 5, 5, 3, and 7 months. We are continuing school through the summer because last year was our first year home schooling and we took a long break in October when the baby was born. (Plus, we live in Arizona where it’s currently 112 degrees outside.) I love to read out loud as a group and individually with each child. Our best learning moments are usually spontaneous – pausing to look at a map or find an online video to answer someone’s question.
Erin
I have 3 children 6, 4, and 2. We go to the library every week and read every day, we spend hours outside, the kids have their own garden, and we do swimming lessons and trips to the zoo etc. I also try to do art projects more frequently during the summer.

Kathryn Pearson
First time homeschooler starting this Fall with Grade 1. Children ages 10, 6 and 2. Voracious readers. We are keeping them learning this summer with family-stay Suzuki music camp, trips to the library every Tuesday and daily challenge to read 5 books. Duolingo Spanish and “do a good turn daily” for someone outside our home is my secret mom-mission. I’m learning the guitar to show them I have to practice, too. Honestly, I’m scared about doing homeschool (why ruin a good thing, right?), but I’m sure everything will turn out just great. I just have to find my curriculum and jump in to this new world.

I’ve been in love with dover p., forever!
Especially since 2008, when I first became a mommy…now my 2 (7&2)boys are taking over my love towards to Dover.
