How does Italy sound this summer?

June 21, 2016 //  by Daniela Cima Usher

Written by Daniela Cima Usher of Taste of Italy

Disaster.

The flight from our home in Italy to Cairo was at 7am the next morning, and we’d just been buried under 1 meter of snow! The next day, we were supposed to be standing in the desert in front of the pyramids and now our family holiday was ruined…

Or was it?

“Hey boys,” my husband suggested. “Let’s make a SNOW pyramid!”

“Yay!” they screamed.

After a fun and successful day building white pyramids in our courtyard, the snow melted just enough to begin our journey to Egypt – only 24 hours behind schedule.

But an amazing thing happened in the years after that fantastic adventure.

The snow pyramid became one of our boys’ top three memories from the trip! And it didn’t even happen in Egypt! It happened right in our very own home.

That fact has stuck with me over the years.

As we all know, our kids learn more by doing.

IMG_0836

I ran an art restoration school and museum in Italy for twenty years. We taught some theory, but mostly, we taught via hands-on methods. We were always in the lab or the field. That’s what made all of my students, young and old, Italian and international, enjoy what they were learning and be successful!

As an Italian homeschooling mother of two now living in the U.S., so many people have told me about their dreams of visiting Italy.

After all, Italy is art. Italy is history. Italy is a cultural experience that families would like to share. But taking the time or finding the funds to make that happen can be really difficult!

And…we all learn the most by doing.

IMG_0830

That’s why I created “A Taste of Italy!”

It’s a unique, virtual experience you and your kids can enjoy from the comfort of your very own home.

I’ve created a program that teaches the art, the history, the culture and the cuisine of the Romans, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and modern Italy that your family can enjoy rain or shine (…or snow)! (Check out a sample here.)

For four weeks (beginning July 1st) we’ll make art like the ancient Italian masters, we’ll cook healthy and delicious meals from each historical period, and we’ll share real life stories from the past.

We will experience Italy. We will be Italian.

And I’ll be with you online (and onsite!) from places all over Italy that typical tours don’t reach. I’ll share my Italy with you.

And if you’re busy in July, don’t worry! You’ll have access to the program for an entire year.

This sounds like the “trip” of our dreams! My daughter is 11 and my son is 3. We are beginning our homeschool journey this year (late to the game I know) specifically because I want her to have an education of experience and seeing beyond her small world! We would love to learn a more detailed history of Italy and better understand how it’s art and its influence became the standard for the world that it often is today.

  52. Tristine Fleming

    June 21, 2016 at 12:17 pm

We have been trying SO hard to learn the Italian language for nearly a year now. We haven’t gotten very far despite our constant learning. It all started one night when my little boy wanted a “fancy dinner” like mommy and daddy had without him on Valentine’s Day. So I set up our house like an Italian restaurant and went all out. From that day on, we have Italian Night every Saturday. After an authentic Italian dinner with Italian music in the background, we read kids books in Italian and do Italian lessons on Mango or through our son’s Italian for Kids CD and workbook. Our family is trying to learn together, and I’m always looking for new and fun ways to learn that will stick and get us beyond the very basics. We’ve never been to Italy, but we hope to visit there someday–or even move there. But I guess we should try to master the language first! 🙂

My children are 12, 10, 9, 7, 5, 3, and almost 1. We want to learn the real Italy – not the tourism Italy. We enjoy hands on projects, learning about the everyday people, and absolutely the food. I would love for my children to learn that Italy and Italian food is about more than pizza and spaghetti!

My children are ages 10, 8, and 5. Italy is on my bucket list! I want to learn, and want my children to learn the history of Italy. In the US, are American history only goes back two hundred + years, whereas the history of other parts of the world has so much rich information and culture and longevity! Italy has art, cooking, and beautiful cities. I want my family to feel an immersion in Italian culture.

I have two girls ages 10 & 9. My husband and I love Italy and went there on our honeymoon. We want to take the girls there someday. I want them to experience life in Italy. Italians know how to live…life is not hurried and fast pace. They know how to relax and enjoy good food surrounded by those they love. Italy is about the simpler things in life….the most important things. These are the things I want the girls to learn and experience.

I have two boys (ages 8 and 9) and one girl (age 5) who would love this course. History, art, music, and cooking are a few of their favorite things. Italy has always been a place of interest for them — they feel connected to it through our family heritage (my grandparents on one side and great-grandparents in the other came here from Italy) and through the history they have studied, the works of great artists like Da Vinci, Botticelli, and Michelangelo, the music (they love opera!), and the food (a highlight for my nine year old was baking bread from an ancient Pompeii recipe).

We live in the UK, and my kids love travelling within the country, and only dream of holidays abroad, as we cannot afford them at the moment, so a virtual travel would be an awesome experience. Hello!!
My son is 7 and my daughter is 3. This last year was our first year homeschooling. It was.. interesting. We were building a home and running 2 businesses. Needless to say I am hoping for a better second year homeschooling with less distractions. (Though there were many learning experiences for my son.. there were a lot of phone calls and errands.) 🙂

My ancestors are from Italy. This program would be a great tool to teach my son more about the country our ancestor come from. He loves art and I love that. I can’t draw a stick person. He can draw almost anything he sets his mind to. I want to feed that passion of his.

Thank you for this opportunity to win!

We have been blessed with only 1 child, but this 9 year old want to know about EVERYTHING! I learned long ago that the best way to visit an area is to visit people there and participate in their lives there. It would be interesting to see what a “typical” (if there is such a thing!) day in your life in Italy was like. What foods did you eat? What sounds did you hear? What smells did you smell? What are the people you meet like? …
Thanks for offering this prize — I think it’d be a fun one to win! 🙂

I have three kids. 11, seven and six. My heritage is Italian, my husbands Hispanic. And my kids get so much access to their Hispanic culture, but not their Italian one. We had planned (as a newly married couple) to go to Italy on our first anniversary. God had other plans. We celebrated our first anniversary as new parents. After 3 kids, my first being in the autism scale-we haven’t had much opportunity to travel. Every waking moment has been spent of therapies etc. after two more kids, and choosing to homeschool, money is tight, and we don’t do much in the way vacations. After quitting my job, Marital difficulties, financial difficulties, Italy remains just a dream. My oldest is now 11, my younger 27 and six. I don’t see Italy in our near future. We’re lucky to go camping for the weekend. And I am brace that and appreciate that. Would absolutely love for my kids to experience a bit of my culture. My husband is Hispanic, his parents are local, and living in Southern California they see so much of the Hispanic culture. Not many Italian fest going on here. Would love to be considered for this. Thank you for your consideration, Susan
