Queen for a Day Giveaway 2011

April 25, 2011 //  by Jamie C. Martin

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for entering!

Welcome to Simple Living Media’s Queen for a Day Giveaway! Today we’ve got five giveaways full of treats to celebrate the mom in your life, just in time for Mother’s Day on May 8.

Moms work hard each and every day. You sacrifice sleep, food, time, and more to love on those in your life. Today we at Simple Living Media want to honor you and make one of you Queen for a Day!

This week I get to bless one mama with a basket full of the following incredible items. Each one would make a unique, affordable gift for the mom in your life this Mother’s Day.

1. Serving Platter from Eclectic Clayworks

I absolutely love the handpainted ceramic pieces by Julianne at Eclectic Clayworks, so I was delighted when she sent me this serving platter (pictured above). I can’t bear to put it away in a cabinet, so it sits on my stovetop brightening my day each time I see it.

Any of Julianne’s items would make inspiring Mother’s Day presents. Check out her line of handpainted mugs, hanging tiles and trivets, and salad bowls.

Julianne is providing today’s winner with her choice of small serving platter from Eclectic Clayworks!

2. Candles from Soy Delites

I always keep a scented candle on my desk to light whenever I’m writing. Christy from Soy Delites Candles sent me two of her 9 ounce glasses, and they’ve been a wonderful addition to my workspace.

These soy candles last longer than their paraffin counterparts, making them an eco-friendly alternative. Christy and her husband create tealights, votives, travel tins, and glasses, all in your choice of over 20 scents.

Today’s winner will receive two 9-ounce glasses from Soy Delites Candles!

3. Mama Belly Oil from Baby Bear Shop

I have been a fan of mama belly oil for years now. Designed for pregnant mamas to use on their skin, it is also fabulous poured into a bath or as a massage oil. The ultimate treat for pampering yourself on Mother’s Day!

Baby Bear Shop carries a wide range of organic skin care products for mom and baby, including lip balms, soaps, and baby butter. Between now and May 15th, use the code SIMPLEHOMESCHOOL for free shipping on all orders over $40.

The Queen for a Day gift basket will include one jar of Mama Belly Oil!

4. Teas from Love & Tea Company

Jen from Love & Tea sent me two of her teas, and I’ve been relaxing with a cup each day during my kids’ afternoon rest time.

Jen and her family use organic herbs grown by family farmers to handcraft a variety of tea blends for the entire family. Refresh yourself with teas like Green Mountain Mint, New Mama Rejuvenation, and Be Well–just to name a few. From now until May 3rd, use the code LOVE at checkout to receive 10% off your order.

Jen will be sending our winner two teas–Mellow Mama and Happy Citrus!

5. MP3 Recordings from Feed-Play-Love Telesummit

Did you have the chance to listen to any of the speakers during the recent Feed. Play. Love. Virtual Telesummit? I did–and wow, what a line up!

The conference featured twelve sessions on a variety of topics–including nurturing yourself so you can nurture your children and raising complaint free kids (Um, yes please!). Even if the mom in your life missed the chance to listen in, it’s not to late to register and download these inspiring talks.

Today’s winner will receive access to the mp3 recordings of all 12 Feed. Play. Love workshops!

6. Collection of 4 Inspiring Books

As if all of the above wasn’t enough, check out this awesome collection of books our queen for the day will receive:

  • The Reluctant Entertainer: Every Woman’s Guide to Simple and Gracious Hospitality by Sandy Coughlin. Sandy’s book is an encouraging, practical resource, especially to those (like me!) for whom hospitality does not always come naturally.
  • Green Market Baking Book: 100 Delicious Recipes for Naturally Sweet and Savory Treats by Laura C. Martin. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite cookbooks; I made the strawberry pie for Easter dinner and it turned out heavenly–even with no white sugar!
  • Organized Simplicity: The Clutter-Free Approach to Intentional Living by Simple Mom’s own Tsh Oxenreider. I love the way that Tsh approaches simplicity from the inside out–there’s so much more to it than just getting rid of “stuff.”
  • Steady Days: A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional Motherhood by yours truly. In my book I share ideas that have helped me become a more professional mother. It’s a guilt-free, mamas-be-blessed kind of read!

How to win

One Simple Homeschool reader will win all of the items listed above, making it a sweet gift basket to bless the mama in your life (maybe it’s YOU)!

Everyone has three chances to win. Here’s how:This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for entering!

I did not have a good relationship with my mother, but I love my mother in law. We buck the stereotype of a typical Mother-In-Law and Daughter-in-Law relationship and she has been my acting mother for the past 11 years. The thing I love most, is that she’s always been loving, supportive, and kind to me. Never a harsh word. Which, looking back to the beginning of my marriage and seeing what a young, immature girl I was – I realize now must have taken a concentrated effort on her part!

My mom and I do not have that great of a relationship, but she has always been supportive (in her own way) that we homeschool. But, even after 13 “school years” of homeschooling, she still asks the same question: “Do you get your books from the school & do they tell you what to teach?”. lol Annoying, but funny at the same time.

In addition to having a great mother and mother-in-law, I have a wonderful friend who is actually more of a mother to me. While stationed in desolate Twentynine Palms, CA I met her through a Women’s Bible Study. She welcomes anyone with open arms, each Sunday she hosts a dinner for anyone and their families, and she has been at every important moment in my life since meeting her. Including my husbands return from deployment both times, opened her home to me and my colicky daughter (I was on her couch at least 3-4 times a week while my husband was in Afghanistan), and driving six hours round trip to meet my son hours after he was born. She is a surrogate mother and blessing to so many!

There are so many mothers I admire. But this year I’m thinking specifically of my grandmother. My own mother was not the “mothering” type and really wasn’t interested in being a mom. So my grandmother took me in and raised me from babyhood to adulthood. She’d already raised four kids of her own, but didn’t hesitate to take on the job of raising me as well. Without her I don’t know how my life would have turned out.

So, I admire her strength, her commitment, her love and her selflessness. 🙂

The concept of ‘mother’ has never come easy to me. Mothering is more than simply having children, it is more than not having children. I haven’t quite disentangled my feelings on motherhood with the ethereal idea I have of what a mother is. I love being a mother, but I struggle with defining it, putting words to my inadequacies, joy and pure exhaustion. Yet, I see evidence of ‘mothering’ all around me. Mothering involves a loving hand, a willingness to give more than you ever thought you could, sacrifice beyond measure, an inward drive to love, to create, to help. Everyone craves a ‘mother’, someone who cares for them unconditionally, who brings comfort when they are sick, or down, someone with the right words to say when nothing can be said. In some sense of the word, we are all mothers. The perfect mother?? Or the one I think of? I would say Mother Teresa. Cliche? Sure. On an everyday level, my own mother. Although we have a tenuous relationship, she is the one I remember when I am sick, the hand I used to crave (before I was married 🙂 ) when I was sad, it is her voice I long to hear when I am homesick. I am my mothers harshest critic, and her biggest fan.

My first Mom was not the ideal. My second Mom I met when I was wandering and 22, lost and so unhappy. My new Mom (and Dad) adopted me. I became their oldest daughter, their youngest of the original 5 kids was 6 at the time. They are kind, faithful, loving people. They are my kids’ grandparents. They have sacrificed for me to have this wonderful new life, and I can never repay that kind of love. I love my Mom.

She is suffering from stage 4 lymphoma this year. She’s “clear” in her scans, but if she doesn’t want to pass within this next year, she must have a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant. She won’t be able to be around people for 6 months after this procedure. Her chances of living for years is good after all this suffering is over. She is very strong.

My Mom serves others like mad. She is the quiet server, who does things for others, that no one else seems to know about. She is quietly holy.

my mom instilled many good character traits in me.. that to my benefit keep me wanting to get up in the morning, attacking each day like it could be my last. My mom was the hardest working mom I knew, and still she had joy. I was greatly inspired to be a mom because she made it seem like a wonderful thing.. she has 7 kids and never made us feel like she was overworked or underpaid! 😉 I am so blessed to have had her as my mom.

My mom passed away in 1997 and through the years, I believe God has sent me several “surrogate” mothers to watch over me and guide me through life’s ups and downs. One such mom is a co-worker of mine. She is 72 years old and still works every day. I have known her for 10-11 years and she has helped me through so many things. I know my mom would have loved this woman and they would have been great friends.

    What a fabulous giveaway!

I love how much my mom loves being with my daughter (5) and how she truly gets down on her level and plays with her. I love watching their relationship develop. Even more than that, I love how she has always supported me, NO MATTER WHAT, and is there for me whenever I need her. She’s come to help at the drop of a hat many a time. I appreciate all that she’s sacrificed for me ever since I came into the world, and, now that I’m a mom, I realize how little I adequately appreciated her in my younger years!

Thanks so much for the chance to enter!

One of the many things that’s inspiring about her is she lives a life of dependency on God and does not shy away from looking deep into herself to see how she needs to be refined. There are so many wonderful mamas in my life. But the one I want to tell you about is my own mom. When I had my first set of twins, she came over at least twice a week for YEARS to help me cope with the demands of 3 children under 2. Then I had another set of twins and right when they were getting a bit older we started renos. So she is still coming twice a week to help me out even though my little guys are almost 5. She lives 3 blocks away and she is one of my best friends. I’m so lucky to have such an amazing mom! In the meantime, she has also written a novel, takes care of my grandma and teaches my kids piano. Amongst many other things.

I love to watch how my cousin and best friend mothers her three girls, ages 8, 9, and 12. We have very different parenting styles, but I have learned so much from her. She really allows her girls to make a lot of decisions for themselves and teaches them to take risks and trust their own instincts. She works hard to be a strong female role model for them, and she always sends the message that the only person who they need to care about impressing or conforming to is themselves, not the outside world. My mother taught me to think for myself and stand up for myself. If I voiced an opinion on a subject and she wasn’t sure I had thought it through she would take the other side and make me defend my position. For a time in my life, I was very close to the mother of a close friend of mine. She was interesting and wise and not MY mom, which at that time in my life made her easier to accept advice from. She was such an important part of my young adult years, and I’m so grateful to have known her.

My favorite meal, an extra story, a snuggle on the couch, one more push on the swing–these are my memories from childhood, I don’t remember if the floor was freshly mopped. I hope my kids’ memories don’t include how clean the floor was (because it isn’t clean at all).

And we really had her undivided attention! I hope I can do the same for my kids!

They cheer me up with laughter, party pants, great books, distracting movies, serving someone else, coffee nites, and tea time. But best of all food ie. chocolate chip cookie dough and/or cookies, ice cream, cobbler, homemade marshmallows, hot cocoa, frosties, slurpees, biscuits, cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, white mochas, scones, muffins, and cake. I am grateful for them being there for me and I model after them now when I cheer someone up as well.

I love my mom. She has always had a servants heart, serving her husband, children and anyone else she comes across. I love her love for God. I love that she enjoys her grandchildren.

I love how much my mother and mother-in-law love their 4 grandsons, and that they are allowing their lives to become a lot crazier for a couple of weeks this summer so that I can be involved in ministry with my husband.

I love how I became my mother-in-law’s daughter long before I ever actually married her son!
