ALL NEW: Read the World Summer Book Club 2018

May 14, 2018 //  by Jamie C. Martin//  24 Comments

Read the World Summer Book Club ~
Written by Jamie C. Martin of Simple Homeschool

Here we go again, friends! I’m here today to kick off our 3rd Annual Read the World Summer Book Club, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

It will be our third summer reading our way around the world, one book at a time! Last summer we had over 6,500 families from six continents and dozens of countries join us.

And this year will be better than ever–with a new logo, new printables, and other fun changes, so that even if you’ve participated before it will still feel fresh.

We’re even adding a private Facebook group that will make it more interactive, allowing us all to share from our own corners of the world! We’ll post new videos, recipes, resources and more there.

It’s simple to participate, and we’re hoping that new families as well as those who have been with us since the beginning will jump in for this fun, global adventure.

Just take a peek:

The Calendar

Our club will once again devote one week to each region of the world featured in my book Give Your Child the World, and we’ll kick things off in early June, which means that if you need to skip a week for a vacation or other reason you’ll still have plenty of time to complete the club by the end of summer.

Check out the schedule:

  • June 4th – Multicultural Week
  • June 11th – Africa Week
  • June 18th – Europe Week
  • June 25th – Asia Week
  • July 2nd – North America Week (rearranged to coincide with Independence Day for those in the US!)
  • July 9th – Middle East Week
  • July 16th – Latin America Week
  • July 23rd – Australia, Oceania, & Polar Regions Week

All of your kids can take part, no matter their age! My book includes recommendations for ages 4-12, but teens are welcome to join in with their own picks. (I’ll be suggesting some titles for teens in the Facebook group since my three are now teens!).

And if younger kids listen in as you read-aloud, that counts too!

Drop Everything & Read Lunchtime–when we get the bulk of our family’s reading in!

How big of a commitment is this club?

You can do as much or as little as you’d like–this is your club, your way!

As a minimum, just read one picture book from each part of the world according to the calendar above. (Even older kiddos appreciate a well-chosen picture book!) If that’s what fits with your schedule, perfect–Give Your Child the World contains over 600 book recommendations to choose from.

If you want to do more, choose multiple titles, gather your kids around the computer to check out  corresponding videos, and even add in art projects or recipes.

Just keep in mind we want this program to be a fun part of your summer – not a stressful one!

NEW: Private Facebook Group!!

You’ll also get links to extra materials (recipes, video clips, etc) as we go along week by week in our Facebook group.

Everyone can post and share from your own corner of the world, making our global group interactive for the first time! (If you’re not on Facebook, you’re still welcome to participate without this element.)

NEW: Updated Printables!

As soon as you register, you’ll receive an email with links to all the beautiful, newly designed printables for this year–I love how these turned out!

Print them out and you’ll be organized and prepared ahead of the game.

The downloads you’ll receive:

  • regional maps to use each week,
  • a low-maintenance log to track (and rate) your titles,
  • reward coupons to keep your family members motivated,
  • and a certificate you can print out at the end of the summer for each child as a souvenir!

Invite a friend or two or two hundred!

Our online club has been so special the past two years, but I’ve also loved the stories I’ve heard about neighbors and friends getting together in real life to explore the world.

And since we have a few weeks before we officially kick things off, now’s the perfect time to spread the word and invite a few friends! You can share the link to this post via email with your co-op, on Facebook, or any other community you’re a part of.

Then as the summer goes on, share any photos of your meet ups in our Facebook group so we can see all the cool stuff you’ve been up to! Or use the tag #GiveYourChildtheWorld on Instagram to share what part of the world you’re exploring.

How to Register

There’s no fee to join this summer’s club–you just need to own your own copy of Give Your Child the World: Raising Globally Minded Kids One Book at a Time.

It’s a resource you’ll continue to use long after the book club ends, making it a lovely, inexpensive investment for your family!

If you don’t have one already, go ahead and order right away, as the past two summers it sold out fast from multiple venues due to book club demand! Once you’ve done that, you can:

Register for the book club here and you’ll receive an email within the hour; it contains access to all the printables and other info you’ll need to get ready!

Then when you have my book in hand, choose the titles you want to read each week according to the calendar above. Request them from the library or order your copies so they’ll be ready when you need them.

Are you ready to travel the world again one book at a time? I can’t wait!

Again, here’s the form to register for the book club! And heads up: Make sure you check your Promotions folder in Gmail and/or your spam/junk folders if you don’t see the email within an hour after signing up as they often get flagged there! Mark it as “Not Promotions” so you won’t miss future updates! Email my friend Kara here if you still can’t find it after searching.

This looks tremendous. It will be our first summer joining the club. I look forward to some ideas for teen readers since my oldest is 14 and a voracious reader. I love your book, and this is a great and intentional way to get more use out of it this summer. Thanks !

So, so excited to be a part of the Read the World summer book club again!! I so appreciate your heart for family and homeschooling, Jamie. I just have a question about whether there is going to be a supplies list for the hands on projects? Thank you again for providing this opportunity for families!

Yay! I’m so glad to participate again. I did it first in 2016. I have been reading a lot of the books for the younger age because that is the age of my kids, but now they have moved up and I’m finding more books. I actually used your book to teach a co-op class that I called Read Around the World. It was fun and your resource was wonderful. I hope to try to do another one for older kids. This is such a great idea to expose our kids to the world through reading books!

    Hi Jamie,
We homeschooled before my kids were smaller. Now, my girls are in a Christian school 14 and 9.Could we possibly join just so I could continue to foster and expose good books to my girls? We have a different school calendar also which starts June to March.Could this work out given our schedule? Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Hi Jamie, I would love to introduce this book to my kids and join your reading club, but we are from other side of the world. The shipping will cost us a lot. Any suggestions?

I would probably suggest an e-version of some sort? Or Book Depository, which offers free worldwide shipping, Eva? Would love to have you!
