What kids learn from simply reading together
My children are 11, 7, 5, 2 and 7 mos. I want them to be well-read and to know and love history so that they will understand their past and be prepared to face the future. And besides, history is amazingly FUN to study!! 🙂 Thank you so much for this awesome giveaway!!!

My kids are 14, 12, 11, 10, 7, 4, and 2. History is a compilation of all our individual stories; I ache for my children to get a sense of the wonder of all human beings through all time, to find their own place, to love their own stories, and to see that their own stories will affect the future.

My kids are 7, 3, and 1 and I want them to have a love of history because a knowledge of the past is so important when it comes to the future! I want them to be well read and aware of history so that the bad parts don’t repeat and they can take lessons from those who have gone before.

My daughters are 5 & 2. History…the past…teaches us valuable lessons about ourselves. We can see social changes, human characteristics in regards to facing and resolving conflicts, innovation and industrialization. We learn patterns of religion of mental and spiritual growth. We can learn from the mistakes and the perserverence of our ancestors. History even gives us a glimpse into the future as it seems like things in life always come full circle.
My children are ages 14, 11, 10 and 5. They already have a love for history. I made sure they got it! I love history. We can always learn more..
My boys are 3 and 8. History repeats itself…and it’s their future so I want to give them a passion for history.

We have three boys – 8.5 yrs, 6.5 yrs, and 3.5 yrs. As an adult I have a deeper appreciation for history and understanding how what happened in the past influences us today. I want our boys to also have that appreciation and understanding, but from an earlier age.

I have a 13 year old. We are advocates of learning history and want our son to share in this. It is important to see where we have come from as a PERSON in your FAMILY in your COUNTRY and in the WORLD.

My daughters are 20, 16, 14, and 11. I homeschool the three younger ones. However, all of them enjoy history. I think having this opportunity will enhance the other areas they aren’t so fond of such as math and science.

We love history because it is HIS story — I love learning right alongside with my 7 yr old as we read living books and can see God’s hand throughout the entirety of time. Thank you Jamie! My daughter is 11. Due to your recommendations, I’ve been interested in purchasing TJ for next year. I would like my daughter to have a passion for history because it gives us the greatest opportunity to feel grounded in our world based on how we got here. I find studying history chronologically gives us such a great perspective on where we are today. Studying the important people who have shaped history provides one of the best backdrops for learning about character and spirituality. Studying the sweeping epochs shows our human evolution (or sometimes our lack of evolution). I hope my daughter can feel confidence in herself and the future by understanding our past.

Living in the Historical Triangle in Virginia has opened their eyes to American History and we are so fortunate to have so much of it in our backyard. A whole bunch of kids from 4 to age 16. History? You need to know where you’ve been to see where you are going! I have been shocked over the years how much I was NOT taught about history when I was in school.
My kiddos are 5, 3, and 6 months. We’re just getting started! I think learning history is so, so important so that we can apply other’s experiences/mistakes to our current situations because, you know, “history repeats itself.”

My children are 11, 8, 8. I want them to have a passion for history for two reasons. One, because I never did and I think it hampered my education. Second, because history is so important for understanding the world and for gaining wisdom for the future.

I’d like our 6- and 4- year old to have a good understanding of history so they can understand the great and not-so-great choices people before us have made, and how they can build upon great foundations in their own lives.
Our children are 7, 5, 3, and 1. There is much to learn from history and it keeps things in perspective.
I have kids ages 3-8! We love history here! I think history is so important because it is the foundation of where and who we are. I want my kids to know the backstory of the world so they can appreciate how far we come, and also use it as a tool to look forward to our future. This looks wonderful!

My children are 16,13,&4. We have had opportunity to view the drastic changes in today’s Common Core agenda to re-write History and it is alarming!! I believe it is vital to learn from history but if that history has been manipulated, as a country making progress will be hindered. It is also a blessing to know how our country was formed and the world for that matter, in a truthful way.

My children range in age from 14 down to 2. History is very important because of the lessons it can teach us – both in the good and the bad – in the things that work and in the things that don’t. I want my children to be familiar with people who made a difference, and to be encouraged that people can and do change the course of history.

My children are 4 and 7 and they already enjoy hearing stories about historical events. I want their passion for history to grow because history teaches us so much about character, leadership and courage. Reminds me of the C.S. Lewis quote “Since it is so likely that children will encounter cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.”

This quote from William McNeill sums it up for me, “the changing perspectives of historical understanding are the very best introduction we can have to the practical problems of real life”. I have 4-almost 5-year-old twins. History has always been a favorite subject of mine and I hope my children will think the same. The study of history, both the good and bad, is necessary in learning from mistakes that were made, but also to see the good that was done and learn from that.
My children are 15, 12, 9, 6 and 18months. I would like to light the fire in my children and help them see how interesting History can be. There is so much to learn from the past and so many great men and women that we can admire and learn from.
Our boys are 6, 12, and 14. They have a love for history. We want our children to understand and learn from the victories and failures of others. The greater a foundation of wisdom we can give them, the greater the impact they will have on this world for God’s glory.

I have two boys ages 7 and 4. At this point more older son is going to charter school which uses a classical education base fortunately. I see a time in the probably not too far future that homeschooling may be our only option for a quality education for them. My daughter is 13 and my sons are 11, 9, and 7. I struggle with getting them excited about history so it has taken a back seat to other courses. As an adult, I now realize how important history is in our everyday lives. My hope is, for them, through history, they will understand the value of knowing that what is occurring today in our world is a direct result of the past. Your curriculum will aid in that endeavor!

I would love for them to have a passion for history because there is so much to learn from it – what has worked for certain groups of people, how they lived off the land, how civilizations lived and learned and in some cases perished. There are just so many interesting stories and events! This would be an awesome package to win!

I just finished “A Thomas Jefferson Education” And just started homeschooling my 9yr old last fall and next fall I will add my 7 yr old. (And soon my 2yr old) Im so excited for this journey. This book has really helped me on how to be a good mentor and student to my children. I think a TJEd is a great curriculum and I hope more people discover this program. Thank you for adding awareness through this giveaway!
My children are 7,9 20. My goal is to give my children a passion for all learning in general. not just to give them a fil in the blank education. i want them to be life long learners with a passion for learning. Also I want them to have a passion for history because its our heritage and there is so much to be learned fom looking into the past.
My children are 12,11,11,10,8,7. I believe it’s important to teach them to love history because there is so much they can learn. To know what others have done to get us where we are now. They can learn from the good so we can focus on getting back to that. And learn from the not so good so we won’t repeat it. I am raising the next generation. What if they want to be in politics they need to know what has happened from then till now. I also want to make it real to them, not just reading about something that has happened but how did those actions of the few change everything. For them to realize that it only takes a few brave people to stand up.

My kids are 13, 11, and 6 and I could say something noble about how it’s important to understand our history so we don’t repeat our mistakes, but the more honest, though selfish, answer is that I want them to have a passion for it because it is one of my favorite subjects and it’s more fun to study together when we’re all excited about the topic.

My children are ages 9 and 12. They are already developing a passion for history because I am passionate about history. It tells us who we are, where we came from, and where we’re headed if we don’t learn lessons from our past. (For instance, we’re currently studying Hitler’s initial occupations of nearby countries and discussing similarities between it and the situation in Crimea today!) History has been our foundation for learning about the world – scientific discoveries, music, literature – so this resource sounds like the perfect fit for our family as we transition from the Love of Learning phase to the Scholar phase. (Yes, we’re already TJEd believers!) Thanks for introducing us to TJEd 4 years ago.

My sweet babes are six and four. We’ve been dabbling in history with biographies. We read about historical figures and then add them to our on-going timeline. This is working for us currently, but I know there will come a time to make it a bit more formalized. Thanks so much!

I have 6 children ranging in age from 28 to 15. I think it is vital for children to learn history and become part of it. Knowing the history of a nation, people, etc. creates and understanding that cannot come from any other way. Understanding why and how things come to be is helpful in future decision making. Learning who leaders are and why and how they led is vital in becoming a citizen. The list of why I want them to learn history is pretty much endless, and finding people who can help them have a passion for it is crucial as well. Reading “This Week in History” can help with that too I just realized…ah ha moment.

I have a 17, 14, 10 and 6 year old. It is so important for us to learn history in order to truly understand what is going on in the world, and to help us not to repeat mistakes of the past. I especially think it is important to study the founding fathers and how they truly meant for this country to be. If you do, you will realize how far we have strayed from that vision, and how our freedom is being taken away from us little by little. We can’t stop evils like what happened with Hitler, and Communism if we don’t truly understand what happened, and how the people in that time actually embraced these ideas as being their salvation. We are now seeing the encroachment of Socialism and Communism in America, and people are too ignorant and blind to see it, perhaps because they have not studied the past and learned from it. I want my children to be the exception, and to grow up armed with knowledge and values, so they may stand up for liberty, and values, and fight against the forces of evil that seek to destroy.
My children are 11, 9, 2, and 3 months. History is important to our children so they may know the failures and triumphs of the past generations. Without such knowledge wisdom is lacking.

This is my first year homeschooling my 10-year old son and this curriculum looks wonderful. I want him to learn history namely because I feel like I retained so little from my schooling. So many points in history are fascinating and we don’t read enough of it.

My son is 9 years old. History gives us the opportunity to see how people who have come before us think and how they lived. It shows us how we have overcome obstacles and tackled problems in the past. It teaches us ways we have changed and persevered over time. By looking at the past, it gives us ideas about how to move forward in the future, strength by seeing all that has been accomplished before us, and renewed hope for how great our tomorrow can be. We have the opportunity to learn from others mistakes in the past and to utilize what they learned so we may succeed in the future. Building a passion for history in our children can also build a passion for a brighter future.

My son is 6 and if I can find a way for him to love history that would make me a happy mom.
My kids are 8, 6, and 1. My oldest LOVES history and the idea that we could wrap in all the other subjects with something she already has a passion for is huge. I want all my kids to love learning and it all starts with looking at our past and learning from there.
I love history. My father loved history and literature and he was always telling me stories about our families history and world history. The way he would tell me made it come alive. I’m trying to do the same thing with my kids, make it come alive through biographies and living books and also our families history.
My twins are eleven.
My homeschooled 9 year-old and her friends would delight in the TJEd offerings, as would I–thank you! Discovering patterns and details from the past helps inform us in the present so we can work towards a hope-filled future. It is fascinating to see how cycles repeat themselves and also to be able to identify lasting human issues in real people’s lives.
When I was in school I absolutely HATED history. I now have a daughter in 7th grade who is struggling through this subject and I am the one who loves it. I wish for her to enjoy history now and believe she will appreciate it later in life. I wish I had a teacher who made it more enjoyable for me when I was young. My daughter is 13 years old.

My children are 29, 24, 14 and 6. They are all boys; however, I have only recently been introduced to homeschooling and am doing it with my youngest. I want all my children to have a passion for history because its important to me that they know and understand the great thinkers who came before them; to learn and understand mankind’s past mistakes and to not repeat them. My kids are, NB, 2, 4, and 6. My husband and I are both lawyers, but after graduating and passing the Bar Exam, I felt a strong calling to homeschool our kids. As lawyers, American history in particular is so important to us– I concentrated on the Constitution while in law school. I hope our kids will have a deep seated love of American history and jurisprudence, and will be as drawn to learning about and protecting the constitution as I have been 🙂 plus I’ve been wanting to learn more about TJed since I first heard about it recently!

My kids are 17, 13, 10, 7, 4. We took a break from homeschooling the last few years because we had some family tragedies and I was completely overwhelmed, but we are ready to jump back in this year. I had always felt like I couldn’t find a method that worked for our family that brought out the giftedness of each kid and encouraged a love of learning. I feel like history is something we can learn from, and that is what we are working on…..learning from OUR history , I am determined to find what will work for us and bring out a love of learning! History is amazing and although I didn’t learn alot about it when I was in school, I have loved learning about it along side of my kiddos and want them to value the hard work and sacrifice of those who came before us . I want them to see how it applies to their lives and that THEY can make a difference in this world by learning from the mistakes of others and standing for what is right!

My kiddos are 8, 6, 4, 2, and 3 mos (he doesn’t study history yet 😉 ) History is one of my favorite things to study so I’ve always loved sharing it with my kids. I think it’s one of the more interesting ways to help them see past the me-centered vacuum that today’s kids can easily fall into (mine included!) if we’re not careful and intentional about “linking” them to the greater community and the past. Last year, to help my son with his fear of fireworks we explored the framing of the constitution. It was amazing to see my 4yo so very interested in Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
My son is 7… my husband and I just made the decision to homeschool him, he is being failed by the public schools. We want our son to be passionate about learning and he just isn’t getting that from school. My husband and I are both passionate about history. My husband can rattle of facts for days. I would love our son to have a passion for history. There are so much important information to learn.

My daughters are 4 and 2. History is a great way for children to learn to read; they learn comprehension, linearity, cause/effect, timelines, research, and all this while enveloping in an interesting, real-life event.
I have always loved history, but my high school teacher made it so boring! History is important because it is HIS story, the narrative of how He works. And by studying it, we learn what worked and what didn’t, and most importantly, what mistakes not to make again. My kids are 20, 12, 10 and 8.

History is important because it teaches us about ourselves and makes us feel part of a bigger picture. When we connect with the past, we can begin to see ourselves as part of the future and recognize our place in a vast continuum of humanity. And, obviously… we don’t want to make the same mistake THAT guy did! 🙂
My kids are 6 and 8 years old. I want them to learn about history because I think it is important for them to understand that people have not really changed over time and that their motivations are the same as ours. I think this is important because they will see that events in history can and will repeat themselves. It will also help them to understand people and give them a good background in human nature. All of this will give them the tools to not only get along with others, but to have a constructive voice in current social and political events for their entire lives.

4 1/2! Growing up we moved so often that I had a rather poor education in history. I’d love to give the gift of a solid knowledge of history to my daughter.
My kids are 6, 5 and 5 months. I only started to realize the value and importance of learning about history as an adult. I would like my kids to learn how exciting and important our history is much sooner than I did because I think it will change their perspective on life and influence how they learn.

Our goal is to mentor them to know how to learn, to love learning, and to be passionate and courageous leaders. My kids are 18 months-9 and I’m hoping they gain a love for history to learn from those who’ve gone before us.
My boys are 14, 12, 3, and 18 months. I want my children to have a passion for history because history is what makes us who we are today. I love history and learning how past generations lived. Without history you have no knowledge of the Constitution or The Declaration of Independence and why those things are so important to the country we live in. Nor do you have an understanding of what prompted them and why. In addition our culture is all defined and adapted from culture of the past. We continue some traditions by necessity but Most are to honor our heritage.

Hi, my children are 8, 6, 4 and 1. I studied history at university and one of the things that drew me to home education was the thought of being able to go through it all again with my children! Ideally history (after the Bible) would be the cornerstone of our homeschool, but I’m not sure we’ve found the curriculum for us yet. The TJEd one sounds amazing!
PS I don’t have a Facebook account and am quite happy without, but am gutted that I miss out on extra opportunities like this! I’d like it if I could 😉

I “hated” (a word I used for few things) history while in school. It was my least favorite subject by far. My kids (ages 12-19) absolutely love history and it’s because I’ve never used a history textbook when teaching them. Btw….history is now my favorite subject. I cannot get enough of it.

What a great post! My chickadees are 3, 5 next month and 7 next month. We already love history because we have been using TJEd for a year and have enjoyed getting lost in historical classics. Connecting with history is central to our life because my husband and I want our children to understand that they are part of a wide and broad history of humanity. This moment in time is just that – a moment. By reading about pioneers and ancient Greeks and Old Testament heroes, we gain a richer appreciation for those things that are changeless in humanity and those things that bear the marks of being a created being. When we can relate to Caddie Woodlawn and Johnny Tremain and Esther, we can learn how to live well – as they did and how to live for something greater than ourselves.

My little guys are 3 and 6. This give-away is awesome!! I’ve started reading about the TJEd education and am loving it (especially since lately I’m feeling a little lost in our curriculum). I have been telling myself over and over my son (my oldest) is only six so don’t sweat the curriculum so much at this level but, boy is that hard (by nature I am a worrier)!! I came across a TJEd education and had a light bulb moment!! My children love to hear stories and are fascinated by many of the children’s classics I’ve read to them. I want my children to love to learn and grow and I believe we need to know where we came from to do this.

Children are the future and it is vital that they learn and understand their history. It is a duty to instill a passion for history so that children understand the greatness of past leaders on whose shoulders we stand today. We would also be lending credence to the monsters of generations past by allowing their atrocities to go forgotten, is tantamount to acquiescence. The words of George Santayana say it best “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

My kids are 4 & 1. As a public school teacher I always yearned to share my passions with my students and did so whenever curriculum and standards allowed it. It was very apparent that if I was passionate about something as their teacher/mentor, my love of learning became infectious. Now that I have kiddos of my own I’m ecstatic to share my passions with them, and history is one of them. I have four kids ages 17, 15, 9, and 8. I have always loved history. It is the story of us, who we are, and where we came from! I want my children to have that same knowledge and passion. For the past few months I have taken up studying our family history and seeing how and where it ties into not only the founding of our great nation, but into the history of the world has opened not only my eyes, but the eyes of my children as well. These stories make history come alive and teach us powerful truths as well. An education without history as it’s backbone is woefully incomplete.

At times it has been a struggle because they each have different strengths, likes, & learning styles, but that is the beauty of programs like TJED! This is a neat giveaway! I read a lil bit about TJEd a few months ago. Now I’m intrigued again. I have 4 kiddos aged 12, 11, 7 and 1. In order to know how to proceed on a healthy path in life we need to know what’s happened before us and how God was either welcomed in or set aside. We need to look back so we can move forward with confidence. I desire that for my children and myself, but get bogged down with all the details!

I am reading A Thomas Jefferson Education right now. It is a very insightful book. I have read a few of Oliver DeMille’s books and I have enjoyed them all so far. My children are 5, 7 & 9. We enjoy homeschool immensely and I would love to use This Week in History next year.
My kids are 12, 10, 8, and 6. I’ve heard some folks call history, “HIS story”, as history really does show us God’s workings in the world. My hope for my kids as we study it together is that they will grab hold of this. I did not grow up loving the history I learned in public school, because it seemed boring to me as presented in textbooks and filmstrips, but now that I’m an adult and am homeschooling my kids, I know that it’s not only the content, but how it’s taught that makes such a huge difference.

My sons are 5 and 3 but as we go through our presidents my oldest already asks who they are, what they did for our country, etc. How can we expect them to understand the present situations of the world if we don’t know where we came from. History is the ultimate story and ties it all together.

Our children (all boys) are 15, 12, 10, 7, 3, and 1. I have loved everything I’ve learned thus far from TJed. When I look at how things are unfolding in our country, in our world and in our communities I wonder about our government and our citizens understanding of history. I want my children to know the decisions which have been made in the past by governments/people and the consequences for those decisions. Good or bad. There is so much for the next generation to offer this world as they lead with historical knowledge.
I have a 5yo and a 2yo. I can’t imagine a better way to keep my kids connected to their education than history. It’s just fascinating–so HUMAN. I love this.

I have four boys – age 7, 5, 3, and 10 months. We are just getting started in our homeschooling journey, and I recently have been fascinated to learn more about TJed. It seems like it could be the right fit for our family, but I need to learn the how! I already believe in the importance of history – it is KEY to understanding our world.

As individuals we learn from our own mistakes, and history essentially is learning from both successes and failures on a larger scale. We really are such a small portion of the world and time, but we can see through history that even individuals can make a HUGE impact on the entire world.

As military children they have witnessed a lot of history unfold related to the military and our extremely curious. Where we are currently stationed History isn’t a subject the school focuses on.

My girls are 12 and 9, and I also have a 7-month old son. I want my kids to know where we fit into our history. I try to teach them that history is not just some old stuff that happened a long time ago, but it is also happening right now. I also want them to know how studying history can help them see the character of men and women in the past and how we can emulate those, while seeing the mistakes made by others and avoiding them.

Now in my later years I wish I had gained a love for it because history can be really cool! I hope to pass on a love of history/learning (something that was lacking in my own schooling) to my kids. My child is 8 and we value history as an educational tool because it provides starting points for conversation, opens doors to questions of science, math, medicine, politics, economics, geography, religion, and the evolution of humans and animals. Most recently exploring our family history in the USA made my husband and I discover how recently our families had emmigrated to this country–sparking a desire to learn more about our families and their home countries. Even as Easter approaches, we have decided to approach the main meal not as typical Americans, but as food archiologist in the hope we will discover foods new to us that have historical significance to our ancestors.

After scouring the web for homeschooling blogs the past couple of months the discovery of yours lifted a huge weight off my mind and it has become a shining light in our home. You introduced me to TJEd and it resonated so strongly, it’s where my heart was taking me but I needed to see that others were doing something similar to allow myself to believe in it. I would love to have the This Week in History bundle permeate our home and our lives – history is the web of life woven by those who travelled the paths before us – it can inspire, shock, and thrill us – leading us to discoveries we never dreamt possible. I didn’t do history at school for fear of being bullied, it wasn’t cool at my school, and yet I’ve always found it so interesting. So in starting home education with my son, without peer pressure or fear of rejection by classmates, I am excited to be able to learn beside him, catch up on what I missed out on, see what might inspire, shock or thrill him as we discover history together.

I also firmly believe that there are MANY lessons to be learned and remembered from past events, and a greater understanding of the world can come from knowing history.

My son is 9. I have had a passion for history since studying German history as an undergrad and realizing how much we need to know about the past to make ANY sense of the present. I also love how we Anglo-Americans (who do not have a long view of history like older nations) can learn where we came from, and how our modern culture and worldview developed from multiple strands, and those are very real and part of our day to day lives, from tumbler locks on our doors to Latin roots in our language.

My kids are 3 and 5. We try to instill a passion for history so they can have a better perspective of our lives today. Plus it is just interesting!
Our children are 6,5, 3, 1.5, and 2months in utero. History informs pretty much everything, and I personally want to pursue a better understanding of it — for myself and to pass it on to my children. Besides, having the print version of those books would be AWESOME. Currently I only have the pdf files.

Learning is so easy via stories and history is endless stories about endless subjects. With a passion for history, much of what they learn, no matter what the subject is, will be effortless.

Although I’m not passionate about history, I passionately want to be. And I want to inspire my own children to love history and classics. My children’s ages are 14, 10, 7 and 5. My children have a love for history and this curriculum may just take it to another level! I believe we learn a lot about what’s happening in the world now by knowing what has happened in the past and seeing God’s hand through it all. 🙂

I want my kids (12,19) to know that world history is their own history. I think knowing our history prevents us from living in a self-centered bubble. Plus, truth is stranger than fiction, and history can be unbelievable!

My kids are almost 7, 6, 4, and 2. I have been searching for a way to teach my kiddos history that would interest and inspire them. We can learn from the examples of others for good or bad to influence our own lives and I want my kids to learn these lessons early. 🙂

I want my kids to learn more about history because I think it gives them a global understanding of the world. If you don’t know historical events, you are in the dark about so many things.

My kids are 7, almost 5, and 2. Fostering a passion for history with our kids is very important to my husband and I, for a variety of reasons. Learning about our cultural heritage teaches us about who we are and how we got here, and learning from the mistakes that were made in the past is also an important thing!

I have a 6 year old that will be home-schooled after a year in public, as well as a 3 year old and a 1 year old. I hope my children will have a passion for history because it teaches us about the human spirit- the good, the bad and the ugly of what others have been through and the choices they have made and what effect those choices create as an outcome.

Our son is 3, We had to wait a very long time for our little guy and it has hightened our desire for him to have the fullest education he can have. With what I am learning about T J ED philosophy, he will be able to open the doors to unlock his personal potential. He already has a love of reading, with us reading to him since he was a newborn, so to continue to read and introducing our amazing world through history will be very exciting. We want him to learn about the success of others and how they did it, and also the failures and what not to repeat, as well as things to stay away from. So much to learn from the amazing people in our past and the events that make up our world.

My girls are 10 and 7. I hated history in school because it didn’t make sense and was so disconnected from itself and everything else I was learning about. I’ve only started to become fascinated in history as an adult, and I would love for my kids to learn about history in a way they can relate to so they don’t have ll those wasted years that I did.

9,7,3,and 8 months. We love studying history. We love to see how God’s hand is in all things, how all of our other subjects came about and make sense in the context of history. Knowing history gives them such a bigger picture and helps them to see all that has come before them, and helps them to see how everyday people made huge differences in our world.
