Welcome to the 5th annual homeschool day in the life series here on Simple Homeschool!
It’s time for my favorite season on this blog–and yours, too, if past comments hold true. I love January in this space–because it’s when we get to show you what homeschooling is really like.
And if you’ve followed along in years past, you’ll know that no two posts are alike! That’s the point I want to hammer home most:
A homeschool day in the life is as unique as each one of our families. And by embracing our uniqueness, we’ll find our greatest strength.
So read all the posts and glean ideas that resonate, but don’t read them in comparison mode. Allow yourself the freedom to discover your own homeschool path.
Consider this post your invitation to come “hang out” with me and my awesome contributors for a day!
We’re blessed to have a few guest posters joining us as well. No matter what age your kids are, or what season of life you find yourself in, they’ll be something for everyone throughout the month.
This post will serve as a landing page for the series – feel free to bookmark it to refer back to as we go along. I will update it with links to each post as they publish.

“What is most important and valuable about the home as a base for children’s growth into the world is not that it is a better school than the schools, but that it isn’t a school at all.”
~ John Holt
Rachel
We’re planning to HS our two daughters and I know no two HS will be the same but I’ve always been secretly worried my daughters are too far apart in age to make HS work. They are 4 years and 4 months old. After seeing the list ofplanned posts and the ages of the children I feel really encouraged. A small thing I guess but seeing those age differences listed one after the other after the other was encouraging. Maybe their age difference won’t be as big of an issue. Excited for this series!
Jamie Martin
Definitely, Rachel! You can do this, and I hope the series will help.
Christal
Jamie, I look forward to this series every year! We are still relatively new to home school. My oldest is in “first grade” this year so I love getting a glimpse into other homeschoolers days. It encourages me and gives me new ideas for our family. Thank you for all you do here at simplehomeschool!
Jamie Martin
You’re so welcome, Christal–I hope it gives you new food for thought.
Olivia
I stumbled upon this site last year when this was going on… and I have to say it was the most encouraging. Thanks! Excited to read the new posts.
Olivia’s latest post: Merry Christmas!

Hope you enjoy it, Olivia!
Meg
Jamie, I’m so excited to read this series again this year! It is so encouraging to hear what works for other people and realize that there is no one right way. I always walk away encouraged in my homeschooling journey. I appreciate you!

You’re so welcome, Meg. I never want readers to feel we’re giving a formula to follow, but instead inspiration to follow what’s in their own hearts. Enjoy!
Kris @ Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers
Oh, my. When I first saw my name up there with my kids’ ages, I thought, “That’s not right! Those aren’t my kids’ ages.” {ahem} It is right. Where in the world does the time go?

Ha, I thought the same thing, Kris, when I wrote that you have a 19-year-old!
Kris
I’m glad it wasn’t just me. 🙂
Caitie
Ha ha! I have these moments where I think, “Woah. I’m in charge of three humans?” It’s like you step outside of yourself for a moment.

Yes, that.
Cait @ My Little Poppies
I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to this series! This is our first year homeschooling and so I’m new to this series. It’s such a fun way to show the many different approaches to homeschool.

am I imagining that there was a link-up in previous years? Ah, well. I wrote my homeschooling day in a life – with 6 kids and a preemie (#7) in the NICU. Linked above. I love reading about other families and their homeschool 🙂

Yes, Carrie. There’s been a link-up every year and this time it will be on February 2nd – at the end of the series. Hope you’ll join us then and God bless your sweet baby!!

Not sure how else to get it to you! Love all the posts, great ideas, and wonderful families!
Hannah
I enjoy the Day in the Life series, but I wish there were more articles from people who homeschooled an only child. We could use a little encouragement as well 🙂
Jamie Martin
If you search the archives, Hannah, you’ll find some: http://simplehomeschl.wpengine.com/tag/day-in-the-life/ And if you have a blog please write your own and come link up on Feb 2nd!

Yes, this is what I was going to say. I have only one child and he’s 7 now, and we homeschool him. I love reading all these ‘day in the life’ posts but I know that they are soooo different than our day here. I’d love to know how more moms of only children do it. I feel like it is easier in terms of sheer organizational management of 1 small person versus 2, 3, 4 or more small people, but there are special challenges of only having one child that moms of many just don’t know. Anyways, I’m off to read the archives linked (thanks for that!).
Fontaine
Just wanted to clarify a bit. I’d love to see a “homeschool day in the life of an only, post-preschool, child”. In the archives I found one about homeschooling an only teenager, which is great, and a couple more about preschool homeschool, but it just seems so hard to find info about homeschooling an elementary aged only child. Not just here (and I love this blog, by the way) but out in the whole internet I haven’t found many (any?) current, frequently-posted blogs about it. I know we’re in the minority, but sometimes it’s hard when you feel alone, you know?
So, if there are any moms of only children reading this… write a blog! And link it here so I can follow you 😉

Hello Jamie,
I am new to blogging but would love to share our link in the day-in-the-life series you are hosting. Also, do I publish the post on my site first? Thank you so much for any help you can give.
