    February 24, 2015 at 8:11 am

I have two boys, 11 and 7. We enjoy taking walks and collecting different items (leaves, berries, water samples from creeks, types of bark, etc.) and look at them with a magnifying glass when we get home. Sometimes, not all of the time, we draw what we saw in our nature books. I did see a neat idea: put masking tape (sticky side out) around their legs, ankles, etc..and have them take a walk through the woods and look at what they “collected” when they get home. Haven’t done that yet.

My 3 Children are Almost 12, 9, and 7. They are such a delight to us. Our favourite nature activities ?? Hmmm, there are so many. We have recently moved to the other side of the world from New Zealand to Canada. In New Zealand our favourite thing to do was to look in the creeks on our farm, for eels, and small fish, and even birds nesting in the banks of grass, now we are in Canada we are experiencing a whole new environment that is covered in snow. We love watching the squirrels rushing about and waiting everyday for the arrival of spring so we can see what is truly out there. We can’t wait identify plants and small creatures featured in our Canadian guides. We keep a nature table to collect and enjoy the things we find out and about, that are interesting around our yard and neighbourhood.

Our two girls are 4 and 9. With the cold cold weather we’ve been having this year and being blessed to live on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay, Canada we get to go for ‘moon’ walks on our beach. The Bay is completely frozen over so our little one says she loves to “walk on the ocean” where she knows she goes swimming every summer. Our older one runs around and discovers the most beautiful ice sculptures formed around the trees, rocks and shrubs dotting the shore line. She identifies mythical creatures in these frozen sculptures and together with her little sister they make up stories complete with characters, plot and story lines. They both feel as though they are on the moon and dig to find ‘yeti’ treasures buried deep in the snow and then try to moon walk (ie: jump high and land in the snow…not Michael Jackson 🙂 over the snow dunes. Though freezing cold (even too much for our big shaggy dog) the girls can stay out exploring forever. It’s only a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows that brings them back down to earth and head home to warm up their toes.

What animals do we see? What plants are around? Any nests in the trees? Interesting rocks? Fossils? Neat looking sticks? The possibilities are endless!

I have only one son. He’s 14, and the magical childhood years are waning. Like others his age, it’s all about the digital. Constant screen images and chatter are what he craves, and the natural world pa les in comparison making it challenging for him to see the beauty of nature. For us, I take the simple approach when it comes to spending time in nature. Most times, it’s a simple walk in the woods. After a while, the quiet seeps in asks he starts to notice things. He starts to hear the sounds of nature and the best part is, he can feel it, literally. Ha grabs a stick, climbs a tree, jumps, runs and scrambles. I show him that nature is truly the best medicine and it doesn’t require anything of you but to listen and be a part. I don’t know if he will always love nature like I do, I’m sure the digital age will win out in the end. But I’m hoping that he at least takes notice, and when he’s struggling or overwhelmed with the worries of the world, to take a walk in the woods and, breath in the fresh air, feel the sun on your face, listen to nature’s song, and let It all go!

What a lovely giveaway! My children are 12, 11, 8,7, 5, and 4. Our recent focus nature-wise has been to identify all of the trees on our block. We’ve figured out all but two, and then we plan to widen the circle to the blocks to either side of us. We’ve been surprised by the variety in this urban neighborhood- we think it is because it is an old one (120 years this year).

We like walks or hikes near by to explore rocks/minerals/vegetation. Sometimes even just sitting out side listening and watching the animal world around us is our favorite part of the day! He loves to move and has lots of energy so we love to get outside and explore. He has been asking to do activities and we have started learning directed by his interests and he is having a great time. Hands on activities are the right fit for his personality. Wow! My daughter is 3 and we’re planning on homeschooling her (and a large part of that desire comes from the experience we’ve had rearing my 17-year-old stepson, who did attend school but always wished he was home-schooled). Right now our favourite outdoor/nature activity is snowshoeing (and for her, following in her sled) but we live in the country, so in the spring/summer/fall I’d say it’s… everything! Hiking, swimming, gardening… Good thing I started seedlings already, because I now long for spring!

I have 4 children, three are grown and a 10 year-old at home. We have always loved all types of nature activities. Living within hours of the beach and in the foothills of the mountains, with many rivers and lakes, our favorites change as fast as the seasons. If I had to choose one it would be hiking. I wish I had been aware of such wonderful homeschool curriculum following nature when my older children were young!

Although we live in a very urban area with lots of tall buildings and concrete, my son always manages to find a gift of nature to bring home from our walks. We keep a collection of leaves, types of acorns and feathers. Recently, he found a fallen tree limb on out way to the train. We schleped all around the Chicago El with this branch, just the perfect size for a staff (think Gandolph). He got many admiring comments from the other passengers.

When we lived in the country, we were surrounded by corn fields. We would take daily nature walks (in the field when the crops were down or on the trails by the fields when the crops were planted).

Now that we live in town, we will have to find another activity. We are close to the park that has the creek, at least.

My children are 17, 15, 12, 9, 6, and 4. All of them enjoy being outside, but the four youngest in particular spend a great deal of time in a nature preserve very close to where we live. (By “very close”, I mean it’s about 400 yards. It would take longer to put seatbelts on than in takes //to walk there.) My 4yo was very excited to see a fox a couple of weeks ago, and we love seeing flamingos and other water birds all winter. (The water dries up in the summer.) I think tree-climbing is the hands-down family favorite, though, for everyone except my husband. 🙂

We have a 4 year old and an 8 year old and live on the West Coast of New Zealand. We are lucky to live in a place surrounded by one of the worlds few native rainforests which we love to explore, watch native birds and discover unusual insects even letting them crawl on us (wetas) or eating some (huhu grubs)!
