A homemaker’s overwhelm

A homemaker's first panic attackWritten by Jamie Martin of Simple Homeschool and Steady Mom

It was 1998. Steve and I had been married only a few months, and we’d moved to England right after our honeymoon.

His aunt and uncle (who I had only met a few times) had arrived for a visit. They sat in our tiny apartment’s living room–on the borrowed, floral-patterned sofa that forced you to plant your feet on the floor to prevent sliding off.

I stood around the corner in our closet-sized kitchen, charged with a simple task as a newly married wife: make the tea.

Make the tea?! We’re talking about England here! They’ve kind of built an entire culture around the beverage, and here I was an American girl from the south who had only drunk the stuff poured over ice and drenched in sweetener!

God must have been surprised at the torrent of sudden prayers that arose over Bournemouth that day. His grace was sufficient for me, though, as either I made the tea okay…or everyone was just too polite to say anything.

Either way, I survived.

The details vary, but we all have a story like that. A tale of feeling out of our element in homemaking, marriage, parenting, or homeschooling–a moment when we realize just how much we still have to learn.

That’s why I’m happy this week to be partnering with my blogging friends Erin and Stephanie who’ve created the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle…because as rewarding as it is, homemaking is hard work and it doesn’t always come easily.

The importance and value of homemaking

You guys know how much I adore Laura Ingalls Wilder. Take a peek at what she said about the importance of homemaking:

Disclosure: As a contributing author of this sale I receive a commission on each bundle purchased through my link. So my prayer is that this bundle will be a blessing to you as a reader, to our family, and even to others around the world–thank you!

My parents were overseas, so when in grad school I hosted a bunch of overseas students for my first on-my-own Thanksgiving. My turkey was still frozen, but somehow it made it into the oven. I accidentally put it in upside down, which at least made the breast nice and juicy. But I forgot to put sugar in my pumpkin pie, and served everyone else before tasting it. All my friends were eating it while I was gagging and scraping it out of my mouth — they thought it was just how Americans ate it! I’ll never live that one down. 🙂

Hi Jamie, I really liked your book Secrets of a Successful Homeschool Mum and follow your posts here and must have read in your writing or biog somewhere that you had lived in England in the past. But today I learned with excitement that you were in Bournemouth during that time!! I just wanted to let you know that you have a reader/fan currently sitting in Bournemouth (well, just next door in Poole) , which is currently sunny (summer has come early) and where we have a thriving home-ed community.

That brings such a huge smile to my face, Tan! I used to work in Poole–for the year that we lived there! What a small world.

As a person who struggles every day with anxiety, I wish you wouldn’t have used panic attack in your title. I was excited to read of another mom’s experience with this disorder, and hopefully gain encouragement, instead I found an advertisement. It was pretty disappointing.

Also, a panic attack is worlds away from feeling out of your element.

Julie, you’re totally right: I was using the term panic attack as a phrase meaning overwhelm and didn’t take into account that it could trouble anyone or mislead you. I apologize. Forgive me for not being more sensitive to those struggling with anxiety.

Yes, of course, I am not angry, just providing another perspective.

With a new baby at home, I dropped a potpie inside our oven. It was SUCH a mess! And it happened to be the first meal (that wasn’t cereal) after the baby was born. I had been happy to finally serve my husband a hot meal as I hadn’t been doing any cooking with a new baby. Instead I had the biggest mess to clean up inside my oven. (I do have to admit that didn’t clean up the inside of the oven for well over a week!)

Less learned, put a cookie sheet under a foil pan. 🙂

Oh goodness, Emily, that’s happened to me before with a cake–and the stoneware smashed all over too!
