We have 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. Ages 16, 14, 12, 10, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2mo. Our favorite activity together is hiking and just sitting down by the river throwing rocks and finding sticks, fossils, etc. In the backyard the girls love playing in the tree house “cooking” using all sorts of things from nature as their ingredients. The boys spend hours in our giant sandbox just digging and then ussually adding in the hose to make rivers, waterfalls, and dams. It always makes a mess of the house after when it comes to clean up but it is worth it since they spend hours in the sand playing and creating. Would not trade that for anything even a clean house.

What a nice gift. We have four daughters whose ages are 12, 9, and 7×2. This summer we started a nice family project about “our” ecosystem. We took walks through our woods and yard taking pictures and noticing all kinds of neat things we sometimes overlook. Everyone had age and ability appropriate tasks to do to contribute to the final project, our own book. We also grow a lot of food and the kids like to help with that as well. We give them “jobs” that they like. Oh the beauty of homeschooling!

This year they helped us garden and visited the ocean for the first time. Our favorite outdoors/nature activity changes all the time depending on the season and weather; I think the latest one is making roses out of the beautiful fall leaves using floral tape. We have twin boys who are five years old. This is their first year of schooling, kindergarten. Our most favorite nature based activity is what we call the ‘Bug Club’. We can spend hours doing it. We either go in the yard, for a walk or to the park and search high and low for all and any type of bugs. We observe them, touch them if we can, draw them in our journals and learn all there is to know about them. My boys absolutely love learning about bugs and nature.

I have an 8 year old boy, a 7 year old girl, and a 5 year old boy. We love to hike. Alaska gets pretty cold in the winter so what we do depends on how much we bundle up, but it ranges from identifying animal tracks in the snow to collecting flowers in the spring, we discuss biology, we collect blue berries, raspberries, and rhubarb… Whatever we can enjoy in the sunlight!

We have three children. Living in South Africa, one of our favorite nature activities is walking in the veld (which means open grassland or the country). We are blessed with such a diverse amount of fauna and flora. In every season there is so much to observe, from micro to macro. After our walk we sketch something that we saw in our nature journals, or occasionally we use water colors.

As we do our “nature trip” in our front and backyards, she never forgets to ask questions. One day, she saw a spider web (for the first time) and asked, “Mommy, what is that?” And that’s one of the ways our “learning” together starts. 🙂

Even though we live in a metropolis we have acres of natural woods and trails nearby overlooking a river. We like to go to the same climbing trees and grassy spots all throughout the year. We spied on some robins from eggs to fledglings and collect wild berries in season.

    Hello,

I have two children, 4 and 9. We started homeschooling this year, selecting the Gr. 1 Oak Meadow curriculum to guide us. We are so fortunate to live in BC, presently near the ocean and previously in an area with an abundance of lakes. Our favourite nature-based activities definitely revolve around water: swimming for our older child and digging in the sand or exploring the shores for our younger one.

I have five (soon-to-be six) kids, all homeschooled, ages 9 and under. 🙂 This is the first time in years that we’ve been blessed to have some “outdoor space” and live rurally. Yesterday, we did a “listening hike,” and a few days before that we enjoyed a nature scavenger hunt together. But, probably the kids’ favorite thing to do is to create things from sticks and stones. 🙂 Most recently, the four oldest (ages 3-9) worked together to paint, wrap, and decorate their own “bows and arrows” from sticks they found. So fun! So creative. Totally separate from mom! 🙂

We have 3 children…although since 2 are now teens I guess they’re not “children” any longer, according to them at least. Our favorite nature activity is hiking in the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. We regularly attend a gathering of like minded homeschooling families held in the mountains. Its a lovely 4 day event with much hiking and kayaking. Our youngest collects insects, while the older two are happy to collect photographs of memories. It’s our opportunity to disconnect from the electronic/outside world and just enjoy the company of others in the beautiful surroundings of nature.

I have two children. One of our all time favorite nature activities is exploring the beach. We live by the beach and spend a lot of time there. There is nothing better than watching the kids run on the beach with their shoes off, the smell of the salt in the air and finding the many sea creatures that have washed ashore. Many hours have been spent on a much welcomed sandbar. The kids have found everything from periwinkles, live starfish, crabs, the full shell of a horseshoe crab. The kids never leave without a bucket full of treasures. Once home, I always revel in the sandy feet, the smell of the beach on our skin, the wind tosseled hair and the memories made. We always bring a piece of the beach home with us. To us, their is nothing better!

It lends itself to hours or fresh air and cooperative play & I think I have as much fun as they do!

I have two children; Peggy is four, and Patrick is five, and our favorite nature-based activity is to go on “adventures” around the neighborhood. I’ll gather together a pocketful of trinkets from around the house (usually items from our nature table / fairy table), and we trek through the fields and streets, on a magical mission to find a dragon, locate treasure, escape a wizard, etc. Every observation is relevant to our on-the-spot story; fresh blacktop has been recently melted by a dragon passing by, sidewalk chalk symbols spell out coded messages, little sparrows in a bush are tweeting directions to the castle. As we adventure along, I let a trinket spill out of my pocket here or there, and supplement the story. “A pearl necklace! The Princess must have passed this way!” During one recent adventure, we collected a line of neighborhood children one by one, all captivated with the story, and eager to see it out to the end! 😀 http://www.thecookietrain.blogspot.com

We also pick up the prunings from a neighbour’s garden to chip and add to the mix. I’ve got two kids spread out quite a bit. Favorite nature activity for the younger one is walking about collecting things, branches, acorns, leaves, whatever, and making structures and designs from them. For the older, sadly she is at a stage where she’d prefer to avoid nature. But with a little urging, she’ll spend hours under a tree reading or on a dock dangling a foot in the water. Always with a notebook and pen, or a book to read.

We homeschool two children. Although, our son is 3 years old he said, ” I’m in Pre-School”, and he sits with my daughter, who is 5, and in Kindergarten through Oak Meadow. We live in Alaska, and the weather is getting colder. Still, we agree, that our favorite outdoor activities are looking for mushrooms (mainly in the summer months), and making “footprints, or handprints, or body prints” through the woods. Rain, Sun, Snow, or Ice, we go out once a day and make footprints with the different type of weather provided. My daughter uses this time to draw her letters, or numbers so the birds can see them. It is really fun to homeschool with Oak Meadow in Alaska. Love, The Franklins

Every week my son and I drive 45 minutes to a mental health clinic for low income individuals. We fill a vase on the front desk with flowers. Then, due to the long drive back home…we walk for two hours or so. We found a nature trail that weaves through a university campus…the other day we watched a squirrel in a tree eating an apple (new experience for us all!), we get soaked in the rain, we splash in puddles, we watch running water in creeks, we eat sitting on the ground, we pick up sticks, we picked an apple from a tree and shared it…we explore. Then we drive the 45 minutes back home, ready to do it again the next week.

I have 6 children and one of our favorite nature activities is documenting the insects and plants in our backyard. Our yard isn’t huge, but we have room for a small garden, a butterfly garden, and a few flower beds. It’s amazing the discoveries the children make every time they venture out! Each child has a Nature Journal to record his/her findings.

Yes , we love your curriculum … We have two kids 8 and 9 and live in Bali. We get up early most mornings and go down to the beach to find treasure for our nature table… No morning is ever the same as we find so many things on the beach from washed up coconut pods to very old coins washed up from the daily Hindu offerings … Recently we collected loads of huge bamboo drift wood to bring back home to make our Native American wigwam ,as that is what we are doing right now from your 3rd grade curriculum ….. Coconut blessings to Oak Meadow from Kenza and Jack in Bali 🙂
