Weekend giveaway: Oak Meadow

November 17, 2012 //  by Jamie C. Martin

This giveaway has ended. Thanks for entering!

Welcome to another weekend giveaway, sponsored this week by Oak Meadow.

In their own words:

Curriculum packages—dubbed “curriculum in a box” or “boxed curriculum”—offer homeschooling parents a complete curriculum for a full year. Some parents feel they have struck gold when they find a curriculum package that suits their child.

Many other homeschoolers, however, think that curriculum packages are too confining, too rigid. They think, “Curriculum in a box? That’s not for creative types like us.”

Think again.

Oak Meadow was designed with flexibility at its core. Offering uniquely creative, open-choice assignments, Oak Meadow encourages learners of all types to become engaged and enthusiastic.

When students are studying Ben Franklin, for instance, they might make a quill pen, vegetable ink, and parchment paper before writing a speech to the Continental Congress.

When learning about animal classification systems, they spend time digging in the garden for specimens, drawing what was discovered, and then researching the similarities and differences between them. Choosing varied, hands-on experiences makes learning more relevant, not to mention much more fun.

With an eye towards the artistic and imaginative, Oak Meadow understands that there are many ways that arts, handwork, woodworking, and other crafts can enrich a homeschooling program. If students are given a choice of hands-on projects, this dynamic experiential learning will help them develop skills that will enhance their academic studies.

Why spend time with endless worksheets or doing hours of desk work when the same learning goals can be accomplished in a way that is more memorable and more meaningful? Taking the lessons from page to practical application can make a huge difference.

Letting students explore a subject from many angles keeps learning fresh and lively, and gives students experience in creative problem solving, critical thinking, and making meaningful connections across disciplines.

Curriculum in a box that encourages thinking outside the box—that’s the Oak Meadow way.

Today’s winner will receive one complete Oak Meadow homeschooling curriculum package in your choice of grade PreK-8! (That’s a value of $120-$420!)

Each curriculum package includes everything you need for an entire school year, including lesson plans, assignments, activities, and readings. This is a wonderful opportunity to craft a comprehensive and imaginative education for your child!

  99. Jennifer D.

    November 17, 2012 at 8:24 am

I have always been leery of spending a bundle on boxed curriculum, because of cost and because of commitment. I don’t want to be told what to teach my children, if that’s the case I’ll send them to school! Boxed curriculum because of the cost of most of them, requires some kind of commitment that you’ll actually use it–don’t want to waste your money. I have always been leery, I want to be the boss of what my child is doing not some book author who doesn’t know or doesn’t care. BUT, it seems that EVERYBODY is doing it. And it does sound tempting to have someone else do all the planning and gathering rather then me having to comb through several books, and websites. So I wonder based on the review I just read about Oak Meadow if it would be a good curriculum for me. Guess I’ll have to see if I win.

  102. Tania J

    November 17, 2012 at 8:26 am

Oak Meadow sounds terrific for children who learn by doing and moms who need it all ready to go!

  103. Jen

    November 17, 2012 at 8:26 am

We have been using Oak Meadow for the past two years and absolutely love it!
Reasons #1: It addresses the whole child and layers multiple levels of learning simultaneously. Reason #2: It gives enough flexibility for the student and family while still (in my opinion) covers all essential growth/ academic/ development goals. My daughter (5th grade) commented the other day – that she now (vs. 5 years of prior public school) – has time and space to think about ideas and subjects in between tasks and is seeing how interrelated they are. I have glowing children and this means the world to me!! Thank you Oak Meadow for putting out fantastic product!
    Sincerely, Jen

Just this week I discovered Oak Meadow, having found its link in one of your posts. Reading through the site, example lessons and materials I was touched by this concept. Because of many reasons this was the first curriculum I ever considered to really be suitable for us. So the rest of the week I spent fighting the dilemma in my head if we should invest in it or try to keep up the homeschooling for a few dollars a year. The price was the only thing that scared me off, so this give away is just excellent. Thank you for it and of course I hope to win this great price :). 5 little ones would already still benefit from it and God knows how many more to come :). Children are such a blessing and so is homeschooling!

We started homeschooling just this year. It’s been a tough year getting out of the whole school mindset and dealing with the fall-out school brought to our oldest son. In South Africa home schooling is growing, but its still strange enough to gather comments about me not being qualified enough to teach. I am sure that with the Oak Meadow resources we would all have a great time playing (and learning through that) together – my 3 boys, my husband and I 🙂

Being a non creative type myself, I have been scouring the Internet for help, curriculums, routines, schedules, HOW TO START (oh my I’m so nervous, scared, lost, wanting to excited?!?!).
Most blogs and websites are by these amazing creative, arty, think out side the box moms and whilst I am in awe, I’m so very intimidated by it.
